XWA uses two different scenes for the menu/cruiser/transport mission briefings, and the flight engine. When you go into the options to set up the graphics for the flight scene, there are a bunch of 4:3 resolutions available, but no matter what is selected, my game always resets it back to the 800x600 resolution when loading into the flight engine.
I know that there's no way to get widescreen support in the game without outside tools, but why did GOG include the other resolution options in the game if things were just going to be locked at 800x600? Am I the only one having this issue?

I'm running things on an NVIDIA GTX 970, so it might be NVIDIA driver weirdness, but I don't know.

I can confirm the existence of this problem and since I have the original discs right here I can tell you that the issue is NOT present there, so this is neither hardware nor driver related. I will submit a ticket to GOG support to get an official statement on this. I really hope this can be fixed.

Try messing with your video card scaling settings? Might be due to your monitor not playing nicely with 4:3 resolutions.

It's locked in the game settings. No matter what you change the resolution to, once you launch a mission it goes back to 800x600 in the settings. And as I said this isn't the case with in the original version of XWA.

yeah this is annoying..... hope someone fixes it...
Fixed with XWA Hacker.

Simply changed the 800x600 to 1650x1050 with it, my native resolution.
Can´t wait to try the same when XWA Upgrade fixes their package!

Can't test XWA Hacker on this system right know. I'm glad to hear that XWA hacker is working for you since several users have been reporting that isn't working for them.

It's a solution that I'll probably end up using no matter what so I can use my native 1920x1080 16:9 resolution, but it's still an issue in the GOG version that should be fixed for other people who won't be using XWAhacker.
I agree that native Widescreen support should be implemented, as well as a native lobby system for Multiplayer.
I am afraid we will have to wait a while for those tough.

I'd love native widescreen and more resolution options, but right now I'm just talking about fixing the issue of the game being locked at 800x600 no matter what the options are set at.

Somehow I didn't think on change the 800x600 res instead of keep trying to use a higher one with the XWA Hacker.

What a simple solution. Worked perfectly :)

Did the same thing, working perfectly. Download XWAhacker, follow instructions in the readme, use changeres, and change the 800x600 option to whatever your native resolution is. GOG should still fix their version to unlock it from 800x600 though.
XWA Hack doesn't work, it doesn't recognize the Alliance.exe as a valid file, even renamed xwingalliance.exe.
If anybody succeeded to change the resolution, please explain.
Many thanks in advance

Use XWINGALLIANCE.exe file, not Alliance.exe. It's on the same folder.

Alliance.exe is the launcher, not the game itself.

Okay, I guess I have found the source of our "problem".

The XWA release of GOG has indeed been locked to a resolution at 800 x 600.

HOW TO UNLOCK THE RESOLUTION:
Get XWA Hacker, read the readme, drop the XWA Hacker files into the game's root folder, run the noforce800mode.bat. You should now be able to use any of the preset resolutions from the options menu.

HOW TO ADD WIDESCREEN RESOLUTIONS:
Run the changeres.bat, select the resolution select one of the preset resolutions and enter your desired vertical and horizontal resolution data. Your new resolution will replace the preset resolution you have just selected, be sure to select that one in the options menu. Keep in mind that the text in the menu won't reflect the changes you have made (e.g. if you have edited 800x600 to 1920x1080 it will still say 800x600 in the options).

ABOUT THE CUSTOM RENDERER:

Also provided is a new renderer by JeremyaFr to fix several problems. This new renderer is being discussed in the forums of the XWA Upgrade project. The ddraw.cfg in the XWA root folder allows you to change some settings such as Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering (which are enabled by default). If you remove the files of the renderer from the XWA root folder (ddraw.cfg and ddraw.dll) you can use original rendering method. Try this at your own risk.

If you keep using renderer you should update to the latest version since it fixes the messed up briefings:
http://www.xwaupgrade.com/phpBB3008/viewtopic.php?p=147818#p147818 The GOG installer should be updated to include this small but important fix. EDIT: The installer has been updated!

EDIT 2: Removed the part about removing the renderer to fix the resolution lock, these issues are indeed not related to each other. Sorry guys!

EDIT 3: Added information about how to unlock the resolutions.
