Lambonius: Am I the only one who prefers the non-true aspect ratio? Using DDraw, the pixels look completely square and sharp, and the game fills more of the screen. Also, I hate the 640x480 combat resolution. In my opinion, this game looks so much better consistently pixelated. :)

philscomputerlab: I can relate to preferring the 320 x 200 graphics, but the wrong aspect ratio? Everything is stretched horizontally. This means that round shapes are now oval and that you move faster left and right than you do up and down.

The pixels back in the day were non-square, hence the issue with scaling. There is one resolution that does both: square pixels and correct aspect ratio: 1600 x 1200. So if you have a 1920 x 1200 screen, you're good to go.
Crap, I wish i'd known this before I got a 16:9 monitor. :P

By the way, i'd like to ask a question if you don't mind.

I notice you suggest using opengl output in DOSBox settings often in your videos, but when I try and use it on any game I have slow frame rate issues and have to use ddraw instead which works fine. I run an Nvidia Geforce GTX 670 that is just barely factory overclocked, but I don't use the latest drivers because later drivers seem to cause a slight frame rate issue with the Descent 1 & 2 Rebirth source ports. What do you think is causing the frame rate issues?
That's interesting, as Nvidia is excellent when it comes to OpenGL.

However, if ddraw works, all is good, you're getting pretty much the same image as with OpenGLnb. I doubt it's to do with the driver, I mean Nvidia supports OpenGL since TNT2 days :)

I found out what the problem was with a bit of google. Apparently DOSBox's opengl mode stutters if you have forced vsync settings on in your gpu settings, I should have thought to try that. Apologies for wasting your time with a question I should have been able to figure out myself. :P Games look better now with opengl mode.

Thank you for your vids by the way, they've been very helpful for someone like me who was strictly a console gamer back in the day and never got to play and mess with this cool pc gaming stuff until recent years. I'd be a bit lost as to what cycles settings are good for these games without your vids. :)
No problem! More to come :)
