I have win 8.1 64 bit and downloaded the game via browser. Installed the game, with consistancy check, on a seperate partition (not the same as win 8) but it does not start. Windows told me that it is a compatibility problem, but none of the compatibility options work.

I have read on the web, that it should work with win 8.1. Has anyone an idea what the problem could be?

What kind of hardware are you using? It's strange, but not uncommon that a game would work in Win7 64-bit and not 8.1. What kind of graphics hardware does the computer have?

Having your computer specs could be handy. It's working fine on my laptop - Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit), AMD A10-5757M processor (2.5 GHz), 12 GB ram, Radeon HD 8650G+Radeon HD 8750M dual graphics. Compatibility Tab has Run as Administrator and Disable display scaling checked.

Are you getting a specific error when launching the game?

These are my specs:

CPU: Intel i7-4700MQ CPU quad core (2.4 GHz)
RAM: 16 GB
OS: Win 8.1 64-Bit
graphics: 2x NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M (SLI) (each 2 GB)

The only message i get is from windows itself:

"SpellForce.exe doesn't work anymore
The program could not be executed correctly due to a problem. The program will be closed and you will be informed if a solution is available." (translated from german)

The only option is "Close program".

I'm sorry for the extremely late reply. Have you tried disabling SLI? That can certainly cause problems for some games.

I had exactly the same problem like you, just found a solution that worked for me. But I'm not sure if it helps you, I downloaded and installed the game via GOG Galaxy.

First, I had to replace my spellforce.exe with one that works for my screen resolution. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to add a link, ask google for "wsgf spellforce widescreen resolution". For me it's the first result, bringing you to wsgf.org where you can find a link to an archive called "spellforce.7z" wich includes executables for several screen resolutions.
And second (that's the point where I can't tell if it works for you) I can only start it via gog Galaxy... Using the shortcut still don't work.... Maybe just replacing the .exe works for you.
If not, you could try it with gog galaxy too. Not a perfect solution, but at least it works (for me ;) )
