More than a decade after the SQ2 remake was released (which itself was released after dozens of years), the only remaining EGA/text parser variant was remade by a fan into a free point-and-click 3D version.

It was made with Unity Engine and you can get it at https://turbochimp.itch.io/space-quest-3d

Oh, wow. A unity game.

If there was a faster way to ruin my interest in a game, it'd be arbitrary DRM.

Also, what does Rodger Wilco gain by becoming a bug eyed demon out of my 1994 budget 3D films?
This version is free so no DRM.
Anyway, I think it looks amazing, but unfortunately the developer disappeared from the face of the Earth (how fitting for this game).
So I'll just leave here the only downsides in my eyes:
1) Unlike the original, the mouse can't be used for walking. If anything, it should have solved the original's issue of not being able to use the mouse for walking for more than short distances (in newer SCI games using the mouse for walking could bypass obstacles).
2) Unlike the original, it's not portable. Requiring an installation might mean less chance to work in the future. In addition, it writes to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Turbo Chimp, %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Turbo Chimp and even to the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Turbo Chimp.
But there is a way to make it portable nonetheless - by downloading my portabilizer app launcher, which includes a SQ3D preset. All you need to do is put the game anywhere you want and set the launcher to the game's folder (after one-time installing, then copying the folder to where you want it and uninstall).

More minor issues:
1) Unlike the original, after taking their reactor, the rats don't attack.
2) In the garbage ship some useless junk can be looked at only only to display large black squares.
3) Save games can't be deleted (yet it's minor because they can be deleted by file explorer from the latter aforementioned folder).
4) The robot fight with Elmo sometimes gets stuck on never stopping punches, which causes Esc not to display the menu or auto save to restore to a black square.
5) As soon as the player saves the kidnapped guys, the point count disappears forever (even when the player flies the ship later) meaning the player will never know how many points they scored.
6) Some points are missing or different (e.g. watching the telescopes gives no points) - all detailed in SQ3 Point List (unofficial).
