Simon the Sorcerer by Adventure Soft came out at the beginning of 1993 and follows the path that games like Monkey Island and The Legend of Kyrandia created. It is a brilliant mixture of self-referential british humor and point-and-click adventure gameplay. The game basically consists of 2 acts that contain your quest to become a wizard and defeat the evil sorcerer Sordid. The first act can be described as non-linear and includes a lot of exploration and freedom to solve puzzles. There's even a map to help you get around. In the more structured second half of the game you get to explore Sordid's tower and defeat him and his minions. It comes in two flavors: subtitles or full speech without subtitles. If you're feeling nostalgic about the golden age of adventure gaming you owe it to yourself to give this game a try. Plus there's a lot of references to Lord of the Rings and Alice in Wonderland. If you've played The Secret of Monkey Island you'll notice that this game pays a lot of tribute to that masterpiece. Compare the pirates in the SCUMM Bar and the wizards in the Drunken Druid tavern who send you on your quest and you'll see what I mean.
