@Mal_Khar
I thank you as well for sharing this. Your tip makes it work with PlayOnLinux 4.1.9 on Arch Linux. "gdiplus" here is in "Install components" and it is automatically downloaded (about 315 Mo !) and installed.

An error is displayed in a Wine pop-up at the end of the installation but it does not seem to affect the game.

Could You specify which Wine version are You using for playing SMAC and if it's 1.4.1 are You experiencing any sound glitches? Current POL SMAC script installs Wine 1.4.1 and require sox to run but after installation there are no sound problems [not even minor].

It works well with both Wine 1.4.1 and the system version, which is 1.5.25. I have no sound problem and I don't know what "sox" is.

Each time I exit the game, POL says Wine has crashed but it has no consequences. The game itself is very stable, I have experienced no crash after hours of playing. (One more turn... Oops 1h20!)

SoX - Sound eXchange. Thanks for the info.
I had trouble with "Play on Linux". When I install the game by myself instead and start terran.exe via Wine, it works fine. I use OpenSuse 13.2.
