I have Win 7 64bit.

I Set the shortcut to Win 98 compatibility and disabled visual themes, and still can't get the game to save/load.

Please help!

NOTE: I can't run the GOG version without setting the compatibility mode to WIN 98

I have the same issue and I'm desperate for a solution.
Do you have Win7 Pro (i.e. can you run the virtual machine with Windows XP and see if that works)?
I'm bumping this as I have the same issue.
Ye im getting the same problem on my laptop, windows xp.When i go to save the game or load one.
I try run it as administrator and all is ok.
Same issue on Windows Vista - seems to activate whenever the game tries to access the save folder. Any solutions yet?
I have a solution:

Open the game folder and find "saved games" folder. There is a file named 001 in this folder. Open this file with RCT and you can save now. Save a game. Then crate a shortcut to this save file. Now you can open the game from this shortcut and it won't crash. Pls try it and let us know if it works for you.

YES! I had just picked this up for my girlfriend on her laptop and was having the same issue with saving, where every time she went to do so the game would crash. However, after searching for a solution on the internet for an hour or so I found this and, for whatever reason, opening the 001 file with the RCT executable made saving work! Also, I had already been running as administrator, so just in case that's part of the puzzle, there it is. Now, it works with just running the game normally. Thank you very much!
(Also, running Vista, compatibility mode with 95 (though I'm not sure this is necessary anymore))

THANK YOU finally someone who figured this horrible glitch out!

I opened the 001 file once I figured out how to do that, then I could go in and save AND load games without it freezing or crashing!!

EDIT: Okay I spoke too soon. It's not letting me save/load again. UGH this is driving me crazy!!

I remember someone on this board getting an answer from the gog team.

Basically go into your Roller Coaster Tycoon folder and open the game directly from the RCT.EXE program, normally it opens gog's wrapper or whatever. Change the Shortcut's target to make it easier.

Make sure you're the administrator and, if necessary, compatibility mode is on and it should work.

Worked for me anyway.
Hi everyone,

after searching a whole day and trying pretty much everything out there this worked for me:

Instead of Windows 95/98 as recommended in most posts set compatibility mode to XP Service pack 2.

It worked ok on a xpmode VM, but the full screen mode was messy.

Now its perfect and there is no need for a VM.

Hope this helps other fans of the games.

Hey hello,
I had the same problem on my Win10 laptop. When I tried akursah's method there was no 001 file in my Saved Games folder. However, there was a 001 file in my Landscapes folder. I just copied it from the Landscapes folder into the Saved Games one and now I can save and load a game without it crashing.
Btw, I have my RCT from a disc, if that makes any difference ;).
It runs perfectly on windows 10 for me without compatibility mode, but I discovered I should NOT run it as administrator because then the cursor would disappear every time I right-clicked.
