Hi, first post here.

I downloaded the QFG series after it was recommended by a guy at work. I started playing and realised the games are fairly different depending on the character you choose. I did a bit of research and there are quite a few things that can be missed out on.

The one thing that a lot of people agree on is that its best to play QFG1 as a thief, and QFG3 NOT as a thief. Apart from that, there is no real guide as to what to import into each sequel as and what to concentrate on to build the character.

I guess what I'm looking for is to have the most complete and satisfying experience possible on the series as a whole. Can anyone recommend what character to play 2-5 as and any attributes I should concentrate on upon import and during gameplay, considering that the character will be exported into the next game afterwards. Thanks.

Wrong, it's a magic user. As that's my favorite character type. Pick whatever character appeals to you and play as that. Having played through the games as both hybrid and single class characters I found the game much more enjoyable playing as pure classed.

Actually, it depends on what you want to do. All three classes are tailored to have their own specific ways of solving the quests and puzzles, so you cannot have 'the most complete experience' with only one character. You might take cross-skills but with them you still will miss out on finishing the puzzles by using the other classes skills and specific conversations tied to them.

All of the classes are equal and offer plenty of fun - it all depends on your preference, it's not true that thieves are the best class to play as unless that's the one you specifically enjoy the most.

So rather than wanting to change your classes all the time and looking for the unattainable 'most complete experience', focus on what you'd like to play as: Would you enjoy sneaking around, killing things from behind when it's possible and indulging in shady dealings from time to time? Or do you rather prefer the upfront more honest approach where you face enemies and situations head on? Or would you to utilize your magic to solve problems you come across and get some more magical inside info?

That's what you should take into consideration and plan according to it.

There'll be always things you'll miss out on if you're not the exact class because some events are class-specific, and then of course there are ways you can solve a problem that you'll miss out on even if you're a hybrid because some are just tied to other things you've done in a certain fashion previously. In short, all classes have their own individual playthrough, so you'll never get the "complete experience" even when playing as a hybrid, you'll be just mixing skills from other classes to solve the problems. However if you'd like to try out more, you can always give magic/parry/thieving skills to your characters so you can try more stuff in one go, but I really recommend picking one class and sticking with it. Export it into the other games and then you can replay as another class and you'll see how much fun it is seeing how suddenly you have a different way of approaching the puzzles and gameplay! :)

Thanks for the replies. I did find this on a QFG forum:

Completely disagree. They are right about the import being somewhat buggy and having thief skills can cause you to be viewed as a thief in some instances in V. None of which should be significant issues if you play a pure class.
One thing to note: if you import a character into QFG5 that lacks a spell that he should otherwise have, the game will overwrite one of your existing spells when it grants you the spell that you're missing. Make sure you don't miss any spells (lightning bolt in QFG3 is an easy one to miss) in previous games.
Cross-class skills will not open up all of the class-specific content, though it can open up some things. In a few cases it can also enable alternative solutions to class-specific scenarios. I'd actually recommend sticking to a pure class character the first time through simply to avoid confusion, though the fact that it will improve replayability is also a plus.
The easiest is the Fighter, almost everything is straight forward, and you are working on the least number of skills. The most skill gain required (if you want to max out each time) is the Magic User. The Thief probably has the most round-about way of doing each puzzle, and the most side quests. Choose your poison and welcome to one of the great series available.

I personally like fighter with all my bonus skill points at QFG1 in Magic. I can do everything except the roguish things. And there is the excellent potential to for the honor trail after QG2.
