I'm getting this problem after launching the game, immediately after installation. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the game itself or if the installer is corrupt. I've tried downloading it twice though, once manually and once through the GOG downloader.

I'm also running the game as administrator and have tried compatibility mode.. Any ideas?

Find GOGSetup.exe in that folder, right-click and choose properties, compatibility tab, check "Always run as admin".
Doing that stopped the previous error message, but I'm still getting the "game has stopped working" message as soon as it launches.

I've just checked all my drivers and such to make sure everything is up to date too.

If you are using Windows 7 try adding exceptions to DEP: Go to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced system settings -> Advanced tab -> Performance Settings -> Data Execution Prevention tab -> "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"
If the list below will be empty, press Add and select D3DPopTB.exe and PopTB.exe

I am running Windows 7. DEP was turned on only for essential Windows programs. I changed it to what you suggested and the Populous.exe's were already added to the list. Game still crashes as soon as it launches.

Just to be sure- you get the launcher with graphics settings, and the game crashes after you click the Launch button? Does it happen in both software and hardware mode?

The first time I opened the game it brought up the launcher, every subsequent time it just tries to boot up the game and brings up the "..game has stopped working" message instantly.

I've just tried reinstalling the game twice to try hardware and software mode and they both have the same problem.

You don't have to reinstall - just use the Setup shortcut from Menu Start. You can also try launching D3DPopTB.exe (hardware mode) or PopTB.exe (software) from game install directory.

Please contact our support and send your dxdiag report, and we'll take it from there.
I am having the same problem, Win 7 64 bit version.
Yep happened to me too on vista 64. DEP thing did nothing.

The problem is actually with GOGSetup.exe, not the game, I went to the install directory in program files, double clicked on Poptb.exe, and I'm up and running. Means I can't configure it, but it's all seems to be configured fine for me.
Going directly to PopTB.exe or D3DPopTB.exe does not work for me.
I guess I'm lucky that I have no problem in running the game in hardware mode.

[The setup executable is definitely borked though. I tried running it after the initial setup/launch just out of curiosity, and all it does now is start the game automatically.]

Edit: Never mind. Seems like it works through the Start menu shortcut just fine. Maybe I need to stop trying to launch every dang thing through Windows Explorer.

I also have the same problem, another Windows 7 64-bit user here. I have tried everything that was suggested in this thread so far, nothing worked.
Same Problem here too.

So when people launch the poptb.exe directly, do you still get a DEP issue, or does it fail differently?
