Hi--

When I scroll my view around the screen, the fog of war flickers like a dim strobe light.

Also, my cursor seems to be rendered at about ~15fps. There's just a hint of lag to it.

Is this normal? Is this what you guys are experiencing?

Thanks.

EDIT/UPDATE: This seems to be a consequence of the widescreen patch. So...this question is now specifically directed at people using the widescreen patch. Is anyone who uses the widescreen patch NOT experiencing a flickering fog of war when the screen scrolls around?

EDIT2: i can't believe how frustrating this is. i just want a play a 12 year old game, not crysis or something.

EDIT 3: I HAVE EATEN MY OWN FACE BLARGLE BLARG BLARG

Meanwhile, it would appear this community is more interested in discussing the game's voice acting and other nonsense than actually solving legitimate problems.
A nice rainy day to be out trolling gorshev?
This is a non breaking issue for the user.
plus the Widescreen mod has its own forums

The generic problem solving steps are out there →

Start with a vanilla install

Upgrade your display drivers
Open your display driver's control panel and set everything to default

From the in-game options menu
Turn OFF Software Blitting and Software Transparency
Turn ON Software Mirroring

Right-click Torment.exe under properties on the compatibility tab
Disable High DPI scaling
Disable Desktop Composition
Disable Visual Themes

then install the WideSceen Mod AT YOUR MONITORS NATIVE RESOLUTION
( this is the resolution that Windows marks as recommend under the Control_Panel-> Display Menu )
Check to see if the game now works

if not then install pst-drawfix
Check to see if the game now works

if not then install Wined3d

aqrit: A nice rainy day to be out trolling gorshev?
The OP waited three days before anyone noticed or cared enough to help.

That's not trolling, that's an objective fact.

And if it got your attention, then it was all the better for the OP's plight.

@gorshev
So what if nobody responded? The people on these board are just players like yourself and many of them are friendly enough to help solve other people's problems. The people on these boards are, however, not required to solve everybody's problems. Be happy when they do.

If you really need a problem solved and get the answer here, then you should contact GoG about it. They make money by selling these games so you can expect them to help you out.
Thank you, aqrit and gorshev!! BTW guys, I think gorshev was just being empathetic in his first post; no need to get upset at him. I was also kidding about eating my own face. My face is fine.

I have tried all of aqrit's suggestions except right-clicking torment.exe and changing the compatibility options. I will try these later and report back if it fixes the issue.

In the meantime, I've discovered a counter-intuitive workaround:

I have to choose a NON-WIDESCREEN resolution to get rid of the flickering!! IE, if I use a 4:3 mode such as 1024x768, the problem is solved. In this case, of course, the image sits in the middle of my screen with black bars on either side, but at least I don't have a seizure, and it looks better than standard 640x480. The issue only appears at my native widescreen resolutions.

Also, I did check in at shsforums and the mod's own forums, and someone there was able to replicate the issue. i'm not optimistic that it can be solved, but at least I'm not the only one to experience it.

EDIT: I also haven't tried WineD3D. Have you tried it? I don't understand how it could work, because Planescape doesn't use D3D, and because the Wine wiki claims that the DirectDraw functionality cannot be used yet.

D3D at one point in time was just an extension of ddraw. WineD3D includes support for DX7 and less. I have tried it and it does work. A crossbuild of wines directdraw library doesn't work ONLY because of a linking issue. AFAIK WineD3D overcomes that issue using some code from parellels in order to link to OpenGL in a different manner
When I used the native resolution of my laptop screen, it would flicker. When I used a somewhat lower resolution it didn't.
I do use a widescreen resolution, so you might try the above.
I had this problem, dropping the resolution solved it - the game runs at a nicer framerate now and the annoying flicker of the fog has gone.
looks like the flickering occurs only at native resolution; i'd suggest it has more to do with lcd properties (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/inversion.php ) and regular pixel pattern used as a shadow to represent fog of war than with anything else, check this out:
1.) http://www.gog.com/upload/forum/2010/11/839bc1fb85a2de1e819ba07423b5dc488dbc78f9.jpg
make your browser window smaller to be able to horizontal scroll this picture, I e.g. see the bottom bar (which is overlayed by checkerboard-like inversion patter) flickering during scrolling
2.) http://www.gog.com/upload/forum/2010/11/b7d22146253dad6cce1d8b89a2de9089a06b6f01.jpg
fog of war on the left, try scrolling again, left edge (where fog of war is) flickering

which is probably unsolvable as long as this pattern is used ingame instead of alpha blending e.g.
