As nice as it is having the patches first, the fact that I decided I wanted to mod the game means that my mods will be repeatedly getting screwed up (because apparently HEX numbers change locations with new patches or somesuch)

And with Steam, there is no longer any "Do Not Update this Game Automatically"... So yah..at the rate they are releasing patches, its like I might as well not play. :\

Debating if it is worth shelling out a SECOND $50 to get the GoG version...though I lose my preorder stuff...
Isn't the preorder stuff a pig and ring of protection? That's not worth considering is it? Personally, I would not shell out the extra dough though.

I had not noticed that the option had been removed entirely. I wonder why Steam would do that... I can only guess they felt that nannying users who do not know how to alter their settings would be preferable to allowing the option for those who do.
Yah, I couldn't define a definitive answer.
The best I could find was that *potentially* the old option didn't actually do what it was supposed to, so they just modified the wording, to show what it really did.

Yah, the pre-order stuff isn't exactly a BIG negative...still, a negative, unless they are just files I can drag and drop..but unsure about that.

You can give yourself them with the console.

Or just copy all the steam files over your GoG install except the EXE. This works for a lot of games.
Would running Steam in offline mode not bypass any attempt to update the game and overwrite your modded files?

You're not wrong, but I use Steam as my primary mode of communication with long distance friends, meaning I wouldn't really be able to chat with them if I remained in Offline mode constantly. And our schedules are hectic enough that turning off offline mode periodically doesn't necessarily guarantee they will be around to. We also chat while gaming a lot too.

Now yes, I could switch to offline mode every time I start up the game, and switch it off when I exit...but frankly, I wonder how many times it will take until I forget once, log in online, and it suddenly downloads the patch, thus making all my mods go kablooey.

Most people are not aware that mods need to be updated at every new patch. I tend to mod my games after a vanilla playthrough, so i learned that quickly. I'd say to make a clean reinstall, stick with the vanilla for a while and then go for mods.

As for the kickstarter bonus, nothing useful there. And the pre-order bonus has only that protection ring that actually matters. Still, throwing another 50$ on the GOG version...At least wait for a sale.

The only files you’ll need to copy from your Steam copy to your GOG ones are the following ones:
PillarsOfEternity_Data/assetbundles/prefabs/objectbundle/tier1backer.unity3d
PillarsOfEternity_Data/assetbundles/prefabs/objectbundle/tier2backer.unity3d
PillarsOfEternity_Data/assetbundles/prefabs/objectbundle/tier1preorder.unity3d
You might not have the first two files if you are not a Kickstarter backer of the game.

I'd say wait till it goes on sale for 50% off or better, then get it here.
I do that with games I own on steam that are really good.
I'm not supporting steam anymore.

I am doing that, nearly replaced my 30 or so games on steam, I no longer support steam anymore either.

Steams customer relations and business ethics stink.

According to Valve, you have to have all of your game library fully updated (to the patch status on the day you decide to go offline) before you can initiate offline mode. I've never tried to do it with some files not updated, so I don't know if that applies anymore or not.

Someone said that Steam is no longer allowing the user to block updates...?

Steam never allowed the user to block updates.

Setting 'do not automatically update this game' just meant Steam wouldn't download and apply the patch as soon as it came out; it meant 'Download and apply the patch when I try to start the game.'

You could go offline, but if Steam knew a patch existed, you could not launch the game even in offline mode till you went online and got the patch.

That behavior hasn't changed, they just changed the wording on the option to make it more obvious what it actually does.
