There's a fanpatch that makes it run fine on newer OS's and the Windows version has 16 bit colour instead of the 256 colour that the DOS version has. It'd be really nice if I could actually play Phantasmagoria 2 the way I remember it...
I'd like to add my vote for the possibility.

I own the game on GOG but I also have the CD version.

I started playing the GOG version but after installing the Windows version with Squirt the Cat's installer, the difference is amazing.

It works perfectly with Windows 7 64-bit, the only negative being I have to swap disks.

The GOG version was acceptable for just walking around talking to people, but once the intense scenes start the bad quality video really detracts from the impact.

Even if they just have the CD image files as an unsupported extra it would be good for those who want to go to the effort to burn their own CDs in order to play the best version of the game.
I don't mind the dos version, it's still decent considering. And I have both the gog dos one, and the CD release that had the windows version only. And it was probably easier for the gog team to use the dos one.
Well, I got a reply from GOG about requesting the Windows version.

"Unfortunately we either weren't able to get the rights to distribute Windows version, or couldn't make it work on newer operating systems. I apologise for the inconvenience.

Bad news guys. =( At least I still have my original P2 CDs.

Sorry about the news, though I personally don't mind the dos version, still love the game either way. :)

Actually, I wouldn't say that's an answer, it's clearly a response they send to anyone asking about a specific version for any game.

To actually answer the question it would either be "We can't get the rights to distribute it" or "we couldn't make it work on newer operating systems" not both.

I'd be very surprised if they didn't have the rights to the Windows version, as from what I've read the game was only released in Windows 95 and it was a subsequent patch that made it compatible with DOS.

And as for being unable to make it work with newer operating systems, they can still distribute the image files as an unsupported extra (like they did with the Heroes II Windows version) and give the customer the choice.

no it at least had a dos version. My manual for the disc version gives installation instructions for both versions. Though my discs only had windows. I'm assuming they had a dos release and windows.

Oops. My mistake. Just rechecked Mobygames and you're right - it was at least released as a Win95 only and a Win95/DOS version and possibly a DOS only version.

Still all versions seem to be both published and developed by Sierra so I can't see how they can have the rights to one version and not the other.

Probably just easier to use the dos version if I had to guess. But I'm happy with it anyway, DRM free, and my download cant get scratched like cd's.
I wish they would release it too Bandicam can't seem to record this game in Dosbox very well too many dropped frames when I play back the recording. I have yet to try recording it in a window I may have to though as full screen has too many problems :(
I can't get the new Windows installer to work on Windows 10. This is heartbreaking. I remember being able to install and play Phantasmagoria 2 perfectly on Windows 7 64-bit. I wish someone would update the installer.

Don't worry, the SCI32 support inside ScummVM is improving really fast this year.
The game should soon be supported (at least the first one for now) and then those issues will be gone.

Phantasmagoria 2 will take some more, because SCI3 broke the 64k limit barrier.

I just check dos and windows versions (win98se on vmware) - movies are identical, you can choose full screen movies and turn on/off interlacing in game option (it called movie detail, i think).
And Windows version does not support 16bit color, it clearly says that you need to switch to 256 color or some effects will now work properly.

Guys, it has been now 3 days I'm trying to make this thing (phantasmagoria 2) work in windows with 16 bit color !!! I've read in many places the DOS version is 256 colors only, and the windows version is 16 bit. I've tried vmware windows 95, 98, xp, plus a couple of other stuff I've read in forums and nothing fix the fact that the game is playing in 256 colors only. I'm so crazy about this that I must ask for help. I've loved playing Phanta 1 and didn't even remember there was a 2nd game, but I want to play it with quality, not the poor 256 colors.

Please tell me if both the upper and lower images attached are the same 16 bits colors?????????????

I find the upper images (youtube video) much better than the lower ones (game running in my pc - vmware)... that is what I believe is the difference between 16 bit color and 256 colors, but I might be wrong. Anyways the quality is higher in the upper.

Natalia doesn't know which issue it was...;) Probably, it's because there is no difference between the DOS and "Windows" version, because the "Windows" version of the game simply opens a shell running DOS under under Win95/98--either way it is still DOS.
