Oh, dear me. Someone made a game that wasn't tailored to your extremely specific tastes, that give the rest of us aneurysms in the brain, because they are so mind-numbingly flat and monotonous.

So I guess there's only one thing to do, then! Go to the internets and /tell the dev/ to change the game into Call of Duty, and preferably everything else that you have played before. Because that is what everyone (who rants on the internet right now instead of playing the game or is about to fall asleep from exhaustion) wants

Seriously, though - I can understand why people usually stop working in games-development after a while. When you have to deal with this crap, no matter how amazing your work is.

So I do feel very badly for Sean, who in addition to having this crap all over the internet, also happens to have imbeciles of the same sort hanging over his shoulder in Sony's Q&A department.
I think the main issue is that the game have been severely overhyped and funny enough mostly by "fans" rather than the dev/publisher.

I do kind of agree with the OP though and my trial run lasted but a few minutes before I hit the uninstall button.
My main issue really is the quality of the core game, it really feel like a bland console port instead of a proper pc game.
Sure it's not a AAA game but rather an indie project but this pc release should have been hold off until next year really.

Oh? Wasn't aware of them having a content update. That's something neat to look forward to.

Yep:

Next up we’re adding the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters. Temporal AA and my new cloud rendering tech should be coming soon too. It will really change the game again, and enhance it visually.

I agree. I've seen hype from fans that another fan builds on and so on, and people taking vague reference to features and interpreting them as they probably hoped it would be. In the end, I saw so many people who basically thought this game would be a pastel-colored Elite Dangerous with animals and Minecraft elements. However, that's not how this game turned out.

I do think Hello Games' vagueness on what constituted the online portion didn't help. I figured it was just naming and maybe marketplace values would be set dynamically on player interaction, but some people honestly thought they would be able to play alongside their friends, and some even expected PvP.

I do look forward to the base building--I wasn't expecting it, but now that I'm playing the game that seems like a natural fit. I'd also like to see capturing a few critters as pets or something.

That's pretty rad, actually, thanks for letting me know! And here I would have been content with just receiving performance patches and mods.

Here's an idea, let's keep the Steam Forum attitudes out of here OK?
This thread was nice and refreshing as it had both positive and negative opinions without assholes like you dragging that fanboy "entitled" drama in here.

Yes, god forbid someone with a different opinion than the correct one would dare to thread it down over someone else's head.

You obviously haven't even read the fucking thread, because there were BOTH Positive and Negative opinions.

You must've skimmed ONE post and decided everybody was just attacking the game.

Actually, now that I think of it, you did what all fanboys do.
You ONLY read the Post title and NONE of the actual posts, and just assumed that everybody in the thread was bashing the game, and rushed in here to it's Rescue' and posted your non-sequitur post.

Because your post was truly an entity in itself with no actual relevance to ANYTHING that was being discussed in here.
It's quite obvious now that your post was based solely on the title of the thread.

Socratatus: I`m really enjoying it. It DOES have soul. Some of the planets remind me of Morrowind, especially the huge floating rock in the air.

It`s about EXPLORING and discovering. I`ve played 5 hours, actually likely 6. I haven`t even had a battle yet! I love flying from one planet straight into space then diving down to a new planet, hitting the stratosphere as my ship shakes to the turbulence and a new planet appears before me- ALL seamlessly. I`ve seen other games promise this and try this, but finally one has managed it!

I will admit that the artificial `barrier` that stop you flying really low is annoying. I think they`ve done it to prevent people crashing. I hope they remove it and let careless people crash.

I also wish I could look around in my spaceship. I hate being restricted to one `stare-straight-ahead-view`. I want to look left and right and know my SA. Hopefully they`ll expand on that.

paralipsis: I agree with this 100%.

I really dig the chill vibe, but I do wish I could look about more without steering. It's so new that I didn't even consider hooking up my Track IR, but as the cockpit designs are now I wouldn't get any benefit from it even if it was supported.

For me, this is the one thing that limits the experience I bought the game for. Exploration is kind of hampered when it takes serious effort to look around. This is by no means a deal breaker, but I hope they will introduce some more "tourist" friendly cockpit designs.
Tried it, unfortunately TrackIR doesn`t work with it. This game would`ve been great with it, but I guess if they didn`t think of a left/right view, the even rarer TIR wasn`t going to get a look in. :(

SwissMike: After playing the game for 3 hours I have come to the following conclusion:

1. I did no experience any major technical difficulties. The game actually just works. I might be the only one without problems. ;)
2. The interface is pretty clunky and definitely not PC friendly.
3. Graphics are OK, nothing spectacular but OK. The few building types are repeated over and over.
4. Flight controls don't feel "right". Everything feels sluggish.
5. My major problem with the game: After the first 5 minutes you just start collecting stuff and - that's it. The game throws lot's of items at you which are pretty much all the same. While game mechanics are largely underwhelming (probably) randomly generated items pop up everywhere and thanks to the very limited storage space you have nowhere to put them. It feels like Diablo in space without inventory or fighting.

Maybe the game will be improved and real gameplay will be added. For now it's just a glorified walking simulator. At least that's my conclusion after a gaming session.
Thank you for the review. :)
Some really nice reviews and thoughts about the game on here. Gratifying to read. Thank you everyone for posting. I've read many places calling it the next Spore but from what I've read on Hello Game's site there is lots more content coming. Once the bugs which is stopping people even loading it (such as myself) are ironed out and more get into it, there will slowly be more content and it will build. Sean calls it a chill out came so personally I envisage playing this casualy for an hour or so once a week, something like that.

I don't know because I have not played it but it sounds I might get a little bored if I try a 5+ hour run at all.

Looking forward to reading more balanced reviews here :)

Meanwhile, Starflight 1+2 has 11 'pages' worth of reviews praising its majesty despite being the same kinda thing.
The idea of this thread wasn't to talk bad about the game or the devs. I'm too old for that. ;) For me gaming is like drinking a glass of wine: I might not be able to tell you exactly what I like about it but I can honestly tell you if I like it or not.

I congratulate the devs for creating a huge, all connected universe. Basic game mechanics seem to work pretty nicely - in my opinion they just need to add lot's of content. I didn't expect a space opera or lot's of fighting but I didn't expect to see the same 2 building assets being used over and over either. For me this takes out most of the fun of exploring the universe.

In the end I'm not saying give me back my money, I just don't think it should have been released just now or at least not at full price. Let's all come down a little see where things will be going. :)

Evochron Mercenary did this much much earlier than this game.

SwissMike: ...
Personally the game remind me a lot of Minecraft when it was first released (with less crafting).

it's both potentially grand and mostly broken/unfinished at the same time; it's the kind of game, like Minecraft, where it's success and the potential enjoyment you will get out of it as a player depends of two things :

- The devs continuing support, fixing bugs, adding new features, etc...

- And how much you enjoy Minecract style soap box games where you don't really have any real goal except exploring, spending hours collecting resources to craft tons of trinket while avoiding getting killed at the same time.

IMHO if you expect the game to be the next Wing Commander, the next Privater, or even the next X you will be disappointed but if you expect the game to be some sort of 3D version of Starbound and are ok to work around bugs, crashes, and unfinished gameplay then you will probably have a great time.
