I installed No Man's Sky through GoG Galaxy and it somehow automatically took my username to make it as my name in game. I did not want this and it's uncool for it to automatically do this.

If i were to uninstall the game, download the game through the website and install will it ask me to name myself?

It looks like if you run the game outside of Galaxy (you would not need to reinstall, though I don't know if you need to delete your save file) it will set your name as Explorer. It still doesn't let you change it. Hopefully they will patch that in.
I downloaded and installed the game without using Galaxy, and it still has my GOG ID as my user name.

I do have Galaxy installed, however.

The Witcher 3 does the same thing. In that case, you can remove the Galaxy name by renaming the Galaxy64.dll in the binary folder.

However, No Man's Sky won't run without Galaxy64.dll.
I ran my game outside of Galaxy and it has also stuck my name to explorer. i`d really like to change it to a custome name.
Ah, this is what I've been searching for. I'm also stuck as "Explorer" (no GOG Galaxy) and all my discoveries are therefore by "Explorer". For me that makes it it pointless to go online and upload them (and dowload a bunch of childish place names in the process).

I'm still hoping there's some way to change your in-game name.

I don't think you can use the online features without Galaxy anyway. This is extremly common in online connected games however, most use your account name for whatever service your using be it GOG or Steam.

I surprised so many people take issue with it because as I said it's very common to do this. If you don't go online the name is irrelavant anyway, it serves no purpose outside of online features.

Well yea and it's fine for many other games but i kinda wanted to use my real name in NMS so that if people ever see it they may be like "Hey I saw a blah blah was that really you?" I know the odds of someone who actually knows me ever to see my stuff is quite slim just thought it would be kind of neat.

Noone really knows my net alias anymore

Sorry for digging up such an old post but since the issue is still topical, here is a tutorial I made to explain how to do it :
