I just bought NWN, and I'm running Windows 7 32 bit. After I double click on the icon, and then run it from the launcher, the black box with the eye thing pops up, and then disappears, but the game doesn't launch.
I found another thread with someone who had the same problem, but my problem still isn't fixed.
I got the rebuild patch thing, I read that little guide on how to properly install it for Windows 7, setting both nwn.exe and nwnmain.exe to XP service pack 3 compatability and running as administrator, and it still wont work.

Mmh, I had some troubles running NWN on my Win 7 32bit machine - one of the issues I had, failing to run after starting from the launcher sounds like yours. My solution for that was to turn on 'SafeMovie'.

In the nwn.ini file, there is a SafeMovie field, set it to '1', so it reads like;

SafeMovie=1

That solved my problem, maybe it will help with yours.
Try installing latest 1.69 patch (http://files.bioware.com/neverwinternights/updates/windows/english/NWNEnglish1.69HotUUpdate.exe), it's not installed by default in Diamond Edition. It's got some Vista specific fixed, which can work for Win7 too.

"- Fixed issue with videos not displaying under Windows Vista.
- The game will now prompt to elevate to administrator privaleges under
Windows Vista."

I myself can run NWN without problems on Windows 7 64 bit, I got 1.69 patch and other fix (for ATI-graphics card-problem which is 64bit only problem fi I am not mistaken)

Set "Disable Desktop Composition" in compability-tab for nwmain.exe

While I have no experience if these help with 32bit 7, try at least.

As a bonus, change two following lines in nwnplayer.ini to unlock special violence-settings

Memory Level=1
Memory Access=1
-->
Memory Level=2
Memory Access=2

Cheers!

I've already installed the rebuild patch thing, so I'll give that safe movie thing a shot once I get home.
Alright, none of those fixed the problem, and I'm getting more worried/annoyed with computers (more specifically mine). I'm going to install it on my crappy desktop that still has XP on it, and then transfer the entire folder over, that seems to do it for some people.

Is it installed in Program Files? Win7 has an overprotective streak for that folder and often won't let applications create new files or folders in there and since you're getting a crash at the start, it may well be trying to create some files then. It might be worth installing to c:\games or something to eliminate that as a problem
:( Well, if you are already considering reinstalling, I'll point out this installation guide so you have a checklist. But if you have an XP computer, I'd install there and copy the folder directly to your win7 C drive as you were thinking.

Good Luck :)

This. The UAC in Vista & 7 disallows anything, by default, from saving ti "system critical areas" like Program Files folders. Most of the time Windows will smoothly do a symbolic link to a VirtualStore path (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Virtual Store I believe) but many times it just throws up on it.

Neverwinter Nights stores all configuration and save data in the base program folder (Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights Diamond\NWN) so it is very non UAC compatible. Best practice is to install outside of Program Fiels, or at least change the security permissions for the shortcut to Run as Administrator).

Hopefully it works as a solution, NWN DIamond runs flawless on my Win 7 x64 box.
Sadly, I've also already reinstalled, and the second time I followed the guide exactly. I managed to install it and play it properly on my XP desktop, so I'm gonna transfer it over and see how well that goes.

*Confused why you say "sadly"*

Everyone's advice is basically reinstall it directly onto the C drive. So far, so good, no? *grin*
The guide has a section about transfering from another machine so *crossing fingers*...

Good Luck :)
Well, I already moved the working copy from my desktop to the laptop, but still no luck. I'm hoping I did something wrong though, because after I copied it and launched it, it said that it was version 1.00, and that I should patch ( even though the desktop version DID have the rebuild patch. I dunno folks, I really want this to work.

My solution was to start the game, as administrator, without the launcher (so directly through nwmain.exe). Not sure from your first post if you tried that yet, would be an easy fix :)

Yeah, none of this is working, and I don't know why. I installed it on a friends Windows 7 desktop, and it worked fine for him, all he had to do was run it as administrator. No such luck for me :(
Just installed and had the same problem.

I adjusted SafeMovie=1 like the above poster said and ran in administrator.

This fix worked for me. I'm running W7 x64..
