Hello, everybody, this is my first post. haven't played NWN since it first came out and decided to to a run through the entire first series then go to other modules. So, I keep starting and re-starting the OC to get my class right. With the level cap of 20, it seems multiclassing is an issue. I'm debating taking a level of rogue or fighter up front as it would make my character quite a bit more fun to play.

On the one level of something front, I'm torn between getting up in wizard level faster (therefore getting to the good spells quicker) or making the early levels more bearable/survivable with a level or rogue or some kind of fighter. I've literally wasted a day starting new characters and reading (and re-reading) basically every forum I can find.

My thoughts were either pure wizard, or take a level or Rogue at 1 and maybe 10 (to max out tumble in one fell swoop) or maybe I don't really need it. No matter the class, I'm the kind of player to max out persuasion. Also, early on I'd prefer the Panther to the Pixie if I can open locks/disable traps for myself. Wizard with martial weapons feat to begin? What say you, wise denizens of NWN forums?

Would love to hear pros and cons.

Also I've seen scattered talk that in the OC there are important wizard spells that aren't for sale and won't be found... Is there any kind of comprehensive list so I know what to take a level up and what I can buy or find?

Cheers.

You won't even reach level 20 in the OC. You'll probably finish around level 17 or 18.

I don't really recommend it. You'll need some semblance of strength or dexterity to hit things, you won't deal very much damage anyways. The loss of spellcasting power isn't worth it. I've done stuff like take 1 level of Barbarian for weapon proficiency, hit points and movement speed... but the slowed spellcasting progression really stings and I don't feel like it's worth it. Rogue in particular is very bad for this, since it offers significantly fewer hit points and will actually result in you having a lower attack progression (due to unfavorable rounding) than if you'd stayed single-class Wizard. You can still take 1 level of Rogue if you really want the expanded list of class skills, but in terms of combat potential it's a straight up power-down and not worth the multiclassing.

Spells from the expansion packs aren't available for sale in the OC, since the item merchants were never updated. Isaac's Missile Swarm is a great damage-dealing option that comes to mind as a must-have option, but I'd recommend just lookup up the spell lists added in SOU and HotU and seeing if any of those appeal to them. If you want them in the OC you'll need to grab them through level-up.

Thanks so much; I'll be taking your advice and going wizard from level 1.

Cheers!
The only reason to take a rogue level would be to be able to disarm traps and open locks, but it's probably not worth the loss in casting power, especially since one of the familiars (the pixie) can do it, plus you can always bring along the rogue hireling if you have problems.
Yep. Pure wizard is a lot more fun.
