first my specs:

windows 10 64-bit OS
16GB ddr 3 RAM with 11.8 GB ddr 3 RAM usable
1 GB GDDR 5 nvidia geforce gtx 550 ti gpu
direct x 11 ( 12 because of windows 10 or whenever 12 is released as nvidia has stated my card will be able to use DX 12 ).
amd fx 8100 8 core cpu 2.8 ghz/core
600 watt PSU
1280X720 P dvi_d lcd 17 inch gateway 500:1 contrast 60 fps monitor
razer deathstalker keyboard
anker 2,000 dpi mouse with up to 4,000 dpi with official software from anker
5.1 logitch speakers
turtle beach earforce pla usb headset/mic combo
razer cortex/gamebooster for fps counter screenshots and video recording with it ending no processes. just used for fps counter/screenshot and video recording.

problem:

game freezes when paused and will not unpause.
I must restart or manually shut down PC to end the game
cntrl/alt/delete will bring up task manager but I cannot use task manger
I can run other applications but not use them, can end them without restart just not the game.
some graphical problems like someone stretched too far.
vsync is on in nvidia control panel, set for adaptive where only on if above max monitor fps

question aside from current issues:

what settings should I be able to play the game on?

This isn't a problem usually associated with NWN2.
It sounds more like a application or device driver problem with Win 10.

Did you install the game before the November update to Win 10 version 1511?
Are you using GOG Galaxy?
If you go to the Security & Maintanence Control Panel & "View reliability history", are other applications giving errors at the time the game crashes?

just installed NWN2 last week. had to factory reset PC 2 weeks ago and just installed everything again. all my other games are working fine. everything from dragon age: origins to max payne 3.
not using gog galaxy when I play.

not sure where the view reliability history is located in the control panel in security and maintenance section. I looked in that area but didn't see it.

when I verify files through gog galaxy all are good.

Where you search the web and windows
Type security & maintenance
Then click on security and maintenance control panel.
Then click on maintenance
Then view reliability history.
See red arrow in pic.

Then click on any red circle with a X to see what's been giving you trouble.

so only NWN2 had an error.
everything else was good. I am surprised it only lists it once as it stopped working several times, I guess it group it together.

not sure what all the info says as I can view the technical details but do not know what they mean.

I noticed on the 11th ops 2 had quite working twice but I don't recall it not working as I was fine playing it.

I am able as of right now to play neverwinter nights 2. I am just not using the pause ( spacebar ) feature.

If it crashes every time you pause, it will make it easier to diagnose.
Perform a clean boot as described below and try it.

well, it isn't just doing it while it is paused as I can pause it and it doesn't freeze up.
I just had a stopped responding crash while helping kelhgar kill bugbears. was switching from bow to sword with my chick and other characters were using sword and magic.

I have to say, though I understand the true nature of your problem, the name of the topic made me laugh. So, the game freezes while pausing? No kidding? That's the nature of how pause works!

lol, yeah that was kind of funny, I will admit it. I never thought if it when I posted it or I might have went with a better topic, lol.

hmm this kind of reminds me of the old The Bards Tales bug,basically if you played the game on anything above windows xp,the game would stutter and cutscenes would progress in slow motion. It was mostly due to game engine no longer being compatible with the OS,so the same thing could be happening now :/

then perhaps he didnt update his drivers or didnt install proper directX?

all drivers are up to date. the game did the installation of what was needed. aside from what the game installed I have DX 11 and I am assuming 12 or will when it is out, as nvidia has stated my card will use dx 12.

all my drivers seem up to date when I go into device manager and search for updated drivers I am told I have the latest drivers. geforce experience tells me when I have driver updates from nvidia and then I manually download them and click the clean install tab, after it is done I restart my pc.

just to make sure the DX was proper I just manually went into the games files and reran the DX. when I go to play the game again I will see if it fixed anything.

did you try reinstalling the game? like completely removing it then downloading and installing it again?
