In the original Neverwinter Nights, there are a few characters (NPCs) that you can hire, mostly from a place called Trade of Blades (fi I remember correctly). Each NPV has his/her own storyline that the player can follow which, over time and gameplay, can develop and soon provides unique items. My question is... are these storylines important, or can i just breeze through them just to get more experience for the NPCs and those precious unique items?

They're not important.

Some of them are quite entertaining, some of them are clearly only there because the writers were told to put in one story per NPC per chapter. But if you hold down the 1 button you won't actually miss anything related to the larger plot.
I think they are there to give some lore. You dont have to do either of them but I found the items they give quiet useful.
