Hi there,

So recently I decided I was gonna jump back into NWNDE for the first time in 15 years. It's been installed on my PC for a while. I just never got around to playing it.

I double-clicked the game icon on my desktop, waited, and nothing happened. I figured it was a compatibility issue, since I could see that the program was running in the Task Manager, so I terminated the application and tried running it in compatibility mode. Still ran into the same issue.

Then I noticed that GOG has a launcher now. Yeah, that's how long it's been since I tried playing one of these games. I went ahead and installed the latest launcher available and got the game downloaded via the launcher, and yet I'm still having issues with it not opening while still visible in my Task Manager.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro, 16gb, 1080ti, MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon. Not sure what other specs you'd need, if any.

I do have AVG Free installed and tried adding apps and exceptions. That seemed to do absolutely nothing. Many moons ago, I was using Advanced SystemCare as my antivirus and it worked perfectly, but it doesn't seem compatible with Windows 10 now because when I upgraded to a gaming PC from a regular work station, it no longer ran. I can't even get the iObit Malware Fighter and Uninstaller uninstalled completely from my PC, so if you have any suggestions as far as antivirus compatible with GOG, I'd appreciate that as well.

Steps I have tried:

- Running as Administrator in Windows XP (SP3) compatibility mode.
- Changing SafeMovie to 1 in nwn.ini file.*
- Renaming the .exe launcher itself.
- Deleting the following files due to compatibility issues with RealTek from ...NWN Diamond\miles: msssoft.m3d, Msseax.m3d, mssds3d.m3d, and Mssa3d.m3d.
- Installed OpenAL to handle 3D sound.

*Along with this suggestion was to change the Disable Intro Movies option to 1, which is no longer listed in the nwn.ini file.

I've also put in a support ticket to see if I can get any further answers from GOG themselves.

Thanks in advance,

Mandy

For whatever reason, my original post has rejected my editing twice now, so let me just add a new post here to say that this topic has been resolved.

After contacting support via a ticket, I was given some troubleshooting steps that didn't work as expected. My second contact via the same ticket, however, resolved my issue, and I hope by detailing those steps here that I might help someone in the same boat.

First, I recommend you completely uninstall NWNDE from you PC so you can start with a fresh install, especially if you went through as many troubleshooting steps as I did and now have it in a few places.

Next, perform a clean boot of your system. You can find those instructions on Microsoft's support site under: "How to perform a clean boot in Windows"

If you're using AVG, please be advised that you will not be able to completely disable your antivirus via the Startup menu. Whether right-clicking on the program/application and selecting "Disable" or simply selecting the program title and clicking the Disable button, it won't be listed as disabled. You'll have to manually disable all antivirus shields within the program itself.

Afterward, perform your clean installation and ensure that it runs.

Upon exiting the game, AVG should notify you with a pop-up that the game has been added to your "Do Not Disturb" list, allowing you to play the game as intended.

Restart Windows normally as explained by the article and try launching the game again. It should run without any issue.
