The game is one of my absolute favorites, and so far this version of it is running wonderfully... except when I try to save. Both "Save" and "Save as..." immediately crash the game to the desktop. Help please?
I'm on Windows XP Media Edition.

Didi1: I'm now waiting for an answer from Gog's tech support. Sure would like to try the RM version before buying it! :)

I tell you it's worth (so much more than) 6$, and I don't think you can try it before buying unless you're a pirate .. But anyway, that's not the subject :)
I have also contacted Gog, and I think we all should, because they got to fix this problem, or at least inform buyers about it!

Still have no news from support. Found a trial version of Real Myst on the net and it was worst, it didn't even load. Changed my graphic driver recently but think it does not have the 3D acceleration mode when I look into my dxdiag box it's not available. What kind of graphic driver do you have? Will have to find another driver to make it work.
Computers really are strange .. when you say graphic driver, do you mean video card driver? Or have I misunderstood something? On my stationary computer I got a GeForce 7950 and on my laptop (Asus Eee pc 1000HE) the video card built in to the processor (Intel Atom) I think it's called "Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family" something ...
It's really obnoxious that thisis marked as solved. The post that's marked as the answer even states the the user didn't install the game.
Can we get some actual help on this GOG?
Tried all the solutions in this thread to no avail.
Finally running 100% by using Windows virtual PC 2007 with win98 installed and using a Riven .iso file. (GOG version was still not saving) This seems like a good solution for older game installations, see here for the bits you will need:
http://digiex.net/downloads/download-center-2-0/applications/1022-digiex-exclusive-premade-windows-98-virtual-machine-use-older-games.html
This problem is far from solved.Get up GOG and fix it ///
First Burried in Time now this .Without a save it is not a game.

The fix for this came from Andrew Mackenzie to delete Microsoft Groove which fixed up the game save straight away as well as the same problem on Buried in Time.
THANK YOU SO MUCH ANDREW

Namur: Ok, i haven't installed yet, but i did find this, on the ubi forums on a post by cydian, regarding the 'crash when trying to save' problem.
"Apparently, when Riven installs itself on your harddrive, it sticks itself into a Read-Only folder. Why, I don't know. Attempts to change the security settings are fruitless...for some reason it changes itself back automatically.
So this is what I did, and it works.
This is absolute rubbish and any way you separate them it does not work //////

ken42: This is absolute rubbish and any way you separate them it does not work.

"Apparently, when Riven installs itself on your harddrive, it sticks itself into a Read-Only folder. Why, I don't know. Attempts to change the security settings are fruitless...for some reason it changes itself back automatically.
So this is what I did, and it works.
First, create a new folder in C:\Program Files (assuming that's where you installed Riven). Copy over everything from inside your Riven directory (BUT NOT THE FOLDER CALLED "DATA") to this new directory.
Inside your new directory, create a folder called "Data" (without the quotes). Go into the Data folder inside your Riven directory and copy/paste everything from that into your New Folder/Data directory. Run the game from there, and you should be able to save and load with no problem."

You noticed the " 's, right ? Those mean i was quoting someone else on the ubi Forums and i even posted a link to the full thread.
At the time, like i mentioned when i made that post, i hadn't even installed the gog version of Riven, so i was merely pointing DraconicDrak to a potencial solution.
You should contact support about this and maybe instead of posting in a thread that was mistankely marked as solved by the OP you could start a new thread of your own giving a few details about your rig, OS and what fixes you've tried so far.

The full thread is here

another solution would be to save in a different folder thats what i do with the original release of riven on xp
10-22.

I couldn't get it to work correctly so I just finished it in a single playthrough, lol.

I'll fiddle around with it later though
So, it appears that the official solution is actually "Buyer Beware". For future reference, double the price when you buy games from GOG, as there seems to be a 50% chance the game won't actually work.

Hopefully GOG will try to solve this issue or at least give refunds for an unplayable game. I own Riven and have the original CDs, the only reason I bought it again through GOG is because the original didn't work.
i also experienced that problem and the suggested solutions do not work. can gog please fix this?

i do not recommend buying this game until this issue has been solved
Something I noticed when I dragged the Save.rvn file onto Riven.exe: It wouldn't load the game properly and came up with an error message that said the game would have to reload with a new game. When I tried to load up and start a new game normally immediately after doing that, the first video with Atrus in D'ni froze, like in the DVD edition without GOG.com's tweaking. It seems to me that perhaps whatever fix GOG.com implemented for the videos is somehow responsible for the save/crash issue.
I'm going to try reinstalling my DVD edition and see if I can figure out what's different between the two in terms of config files, etc.
I don't know if I'm correct in this line of thinking, but it seems worth pursuing if it'll produce a real fix for the GOG.com edition of Riven. If anyone else has the time and inclination to look into this, please feel free. I'm not likely to find much time for it myself in all honesty, but should I find out something, I'll be sure to post it here.
People having trouble and problems with Riven (crashing, saving, etc...) should check this: click.

People having trouble and problems with RealMYST (black screens, crashes, slow, etc...) should try this: click.
