I already own MM7, but was thinking of buying it on GOG if it enabled me to play with 3d acceleration on. Does the GOG version enable 3d acceleration or must you play in software mode. I have Windows 7 64 bit as an os.

It's possible with slight tweaking. (changing one registry key). Still, try it on your own version first it might work as well.

What's the issue when you try to play with 3D mode on?

Might and Magic 7 won't play in 3d acceleration mode, but will play in software mode. Is there a work around to play in 3d acceleration?

If the game starts but hangs at initial video, open Registry editor and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Wow6432node/Software/New World Computing/Might and Magic VII/1.0
Double click '2dacceloff', change the value to 1

Edit: Of course beside that, make sure that your GPU drivers are up to date and latest DirectX 9 is installed (Win7 comes with DX 10/11 only)

Thanks, but that didn't work. Software mode is probably ok for now.

The game actually looks a lot better without 3D acceleration, so you aren't missing out on anything.

I agree. IIRC, all that 3D acceleration did was blend all the colors together, causing a terrible loss of clarity. I tried both, and the software mode was by far the best.

Yes, but regardless of that, great deal of users here succeeded in enabling 3D mode, so it is possible.
If I recall correctly, 3D acceleration cuts down on some of the jaggies in the world's polygons, but as others noted it uses worse textures than software mode. If you have to pick one or the other, software mode is better.

That said, there is a tool floating around (MMResTool) that allows you to force D3D Mode to use the textures from Software Mode. Here's a link: http://www.celestialheavens.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9873&highlight=

What's not clear is this comment from GrayFace: "My patch uses hi-res textures by default since version 1.4" (http://www.celestialheavens.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11668&highlight=texture).

So, potentially, if you have GrayFace's patch installed you can use D3D Mode with the higher res textures from Software Mode. But if I'm interpreting GrayFace's comments incorrectly, then you could try using the other tool (MMResTool).

Of course, it sounds like you still need to get 3D acceleration working in the first place. I wish I could help, but I don't have any suggestions that others haven't already made.
Thanks for everyone's help. I actually broke down and bought the game and was able to get the 3d acceleration up and running. It's a blast.....of course, then I bought Skyrim, and I haven't been able to play my GOG's since then.
