I have NEVER had more frustration in getting a game to run than Might and Magic IX. Over the course of 3 separate laptops, I have not been able to get this game to run properly, despite using all the fixes, not using the fixes, using one fix but not the other, trying ever compatibility mode available, setting the game affinity to one core, etc etc etc. Nothing works. The game still starts with a black screen, it still freezes for over half a minute when opening menus, it still causes the screen to go black underwater and after 6pm in-game. This is on Windows 8 computers and Windows 10 computers, dealing with 3 separate integrated graphics cards, and a dedicated Nvidia one most recently. This game does not work as sold with any modern operating system. I have to ask that (if possible) SOME solution be found, or I think it's incumbent upon GOG to stop selling this game as it's packaged. I have literally been trying to get it to work for over two years, and it simply has not happened.

It sounds like you already know about all of the official and unofficial patches so...I don't know. I only use Windows XP as my gaming operating system so I have no problem running M&M 9. However...and don't quote me on this but I believe the game runs fine on my Windows 8 laptop IIRC. Will have to check again as I don't ever use my laptop for much of anything as I absolutely HATE every Windows OS after XP (fucking cell phone operating systems have no place on the PC).
i mean im successfully (besides the under water blackness but its not really game breaking) playing MM9 on windows 10 so its definitely possible to play it ... it took me a while to actually get it to work and im not entirely sure how the process went but there is a fix out there.

I too have gotten the game to this point. On windows 8.1. The part that confuses me is that night time works properly on the starting island, but for everywhere else I get the complete black screen. What makes the starting island so special that it can have starry night skies?
It works on my Windows 10 laptop, aside from the exceptionally obnoxious 5-10 second freeze whenever I open the inventory/spellbook/character screen. That's a problem I had before on my last computer, but I don't remember how I solved it.

Is it weird that I kinda want the equivalent of NewDark for this game? Like, Might and Magic IX isn't good enough to warrant that sort of fan-project aimed in part at keeping it playable on modern machines (maybe run at resolutions higher than 800x600 while they're at it), but it's not bad enough that I'd suggest no one play it ever.

I've tried a lot of things and the best state I can get it into still takes 30 seconds to load up the menu every time. Kind of not cool to sell a game that has such widespread issues running on modern systems.

Have you tried all of the TELP patches?

And these. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKvizNWI-PQ

It might help, try them out.

I tried to download all of the TELP patches but it said they were already installed, I just figured the GOG version already came with them.

I installed everything the video said and it fixed almost every issue, thanks for linking that video, except when I changed the screen resolution in the CGF file to 1600x900 all the menu icons are still in the middle of the screen, any way to fix this also?

I don't know, I haven't actually played the game since buying it, I found this yesterday while looking for MM6-9 patches to save in case the sites go down to use with my CD versions of the game. The GOG versions are prepatched btw, so they're not the "pure" vanilla games btw, MMIX uses the TELP 1.3a for example.

I'm using Win 7 and the screen resolution fix is supposed to be for Win8 and above though, are you using those versions? If not, that might be it, as it's not intended for other OSes.

By screen resolution fix I assume you mean the fullscreen patch? That only removed the border of the game which as helpful but it didn't help with changing the games resolution. Apparently it's impossible to play it in any other resolution than 600x800.
That is a great video, and yes that DOES work for everything but the problem we are down to, which is the fact that the screen goes black underwater and after 6pm in-game time. And contrary to some comments in the past, you CAN'T complete the game without being able to see in a couple of these instances (at night and underwater).

Yep. I checked it today again and it says the fullscreen patch only fixes the border issue, so if it's a resolution problem, I have no idea how to fix it. Maybe try playing around with compatability tabs? If there is an ingame resolution setting, that should be able to change it.

The only thing that I can recommend is to get a CD version of the game and try applying patches to it, and see what happens. Do you have Win 7?

I'm using Windows 10, and I don't plan on buying a Cd version.

Since you own the game legally, you could always download a CD version and see if it works better. If it does, there's something wrong with the GOG version of the game and they should consier replacing it with that one and add the relevant patches to it, and link to the Win 8/10 ones in a sticky here. They've actually done that before, although in that case they were either missing a different language version or it was a floppy to CD version upgrade, I'm not sure, and a regular GOG user provided the copy for them.
