I was going to download this and play it, and looking at the game page saw the top rated review saying that the GOG version was wrong because it had applied a Beta patch that caused a bug that basically makes the game unplayable. So I wanted to ask if anyone knows if that's been rectified (the review is dated 2009 but it's still the top review on the game page). And if not, what steps I have to go through.
I'd like to be able to tell you for sure, but I never encountered the issue, so can't be sure if it is just that I don't find it all that much of a problem.

I can tell you that I have successfully played the game end to end, and I did encounter other heroes in it, though thinking about it, I didn't come across that many.

To me the game was as I remembered it, which was a fairly average game, with fairly average difficulty. People have been posting on here with statements that they are finding the game too hard, so I suspect that review is no longer relevant.

Hey boss,

I just bought the GoG version of Lords of Magic: Special Edition (like last week). The problem with the beta patch applied to the GoG version it that it causes high-level monsters (specifically pegasi) to spawn in level 1 dungeons. The reviewer whose opinion you read suggested that caused the AI to get eliminated faster, and indeed as a human player you can't really deal with that high level of a creature so early in the game. Unplayable? Well, that's a matter of taste.

Here's how to fix the bug: download this unoffical patch: http://members.iinet.net.au/~peterykwong/lomse.htm.

The instructions on the webpage are pretty straight forward, although I would add that you must leave the pic.mpq file in the LOMSE directory. I made the mistake of backing up both files and moving them elsewhere, expecting the download to have a replacement pic.mpq file. It does not.

So far, I'm enjoying the patch. It includes a few extras like enhanced settings and the expanded unit pane developed ManTerA as part of the popular GS5 mod. Very cool, especially for me having only played the vanilla version growing up.

Caution: As is often the case with unofficial patches (or any patches for that matter), you may encounter bugs. Some are detailed on the website; do familiarise yourself with them. I have a fairly deep save going right now and I haven't encountered any other bugs. Fingers crossed.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.
