Geraldine: I can also confirm that this worked for me but the controls, where you select what actions to take is still kinda buggy. They only appear when the player character is standing in view of them. This cant be intentional is it? As it would make the game a nightmare to play. Shame the same method wont work with the pre-equal tho.

Excellent! That fixed it, thanks!

gazdi: If you don't want to wait for an official GOG patch, you can just binary edit the common.dll file located in the Life is Strange/Binaries/Win32 directory:

replacing all (3) occurences of the hex-values string "C5 FD EF" with "66 0F EF"

The starting issue should be now fixed (well, at least for me!)

P.S.: To make the change, open common.dll with your favorite hex editor, then search/replace.
Excuse me for being dumb. I can find the Binaries/Win32 files but i have no idea what .dll files to change as per your instructions above. Can you help me any further? I am annoyed GOG.com let me purchase and download when they know they have an issue !! Thank You

common.dll, as is mentioned, twice.

They sell you a game cause the vast majority of people buying it have no issues. If they could sell you a game that worked on every possible configuration we'd be living in a dreamworld.
If you want perfectly broken "games" check Steam.

They will fix this without anyone having to resort to using a hex editor. The pre-equal game, Before The Storm, is somewhat more problematic tho. None of the workarounds for the original game will work with it for me. But then it isn't surprising since it's a different game in how it was put together. I am sure they will fix that one too, just needs a wee bit of patience.

This worked for me on Win 7, thank you!

You evil genius! Now I didn't waste my four bucks!
This worked for me too, and I am running it on Linux using Wine. Before fixing this, it crashed and Wine reported a page fault. Before the Storm also launches fine. I'm using Wine 5.4 with DXVK enabled.

I suppose that I could have bought the Linux port on Steam, but I really don't like using Steam unless I have to, and the price was right here, so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad it worked out.

Thank you! This worked absolutely great. I downloaded a Hex Editor called Frhed and edited the file and the game loaded fine. My daughters think I'm a hacker genius now. :)

Still, a patch from GOG would be nice for future downloads.

That did it for me! Many thanks, greatly appreciated !
You're damn lucky. I'm not even helped by the hexeditor. And that on the computers, where I played the whole steam version ... (w7Pro, 32bit, W7Pro 64bit) I'm trying to install it again from the Steam and I'll see. If I didn't buy LiS and Lis: BtS at a discount, I would be asking for a refund. This is how I will hope for a repair from GOG. I wanted to have both games in DRM Free backup. Something went wrong here. The problem will be more complicated than just common.dll.

Edit: steam version is ok, GOG version on the same PC not, editing common.dll didn't help. I'm giving up this, it's cost me too much time. Until GOG fixes it, I won't buy another game from him.

Holly smokes! It worked. Thank you very much!

I was so frustrated at this, trying everything I could find on Google and troubleshooting pages. Your solution was so simple. Thanks!
I'll start by saying thx gazdi, you lead me down the right path.
It turns out common.dll requires a cpu with AVX instructions, which my cpu doesn't have. gazdi's solution was to replace them with SSE equivalents, but the version of the game I have (Life is Strange: Complete Season, latest version: 1.0.0.397609_(38128)) must be different, because gazdi's solution alone wasn't enough. I had to replace way more AVX instructions with SSE equivalents. I'm working on a patch to my common.dll and I'll post it later; I was able to get it to start-up and run the first episode.
To those having problems, even with gazdi's solution, what cpu do you have (specifically, does it have AVX) and what version of the game do you have?

EDIT: side note - I don't have Galaxy or Steam installed. Just using the offline installers.

I have a working patched version of common.dll if anyone wants to test it, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post it here. It appears to be working with all episodes (I just checked the beginning of each, not a full playthru). I'll edit this post if I'm allowed to post the file.
The SHA1 hash of the original common.dll that I have is ba158c81c082184488caabf8e7e26453edf2030f.
