I started playing Lands of Lore 1 with Ak'Shel. I managed to explore the first forest area, kill the thugs and the boars before taking the boat.

Now, in the second forest area, with Timothy, I just keep dying in front of orcs and giant Lizards. I can case my spell at level 3 to kill an orc, but after that, I'm left with too little MP to cast anything else than a level 1, and I deal too little damage with my dagger to win any encounter. I do take rests between fights to regain my MPs and HPs. Timothy doesn't seem very efficient either in combat... Consuming Aloe leaves is next to useless, considering how little HPs they restore...

What am I doing wrong? Should I flee, rest, and attack again? Is it unrealistic at this stage to hope win an encounter in one go?

EDIT2: Well, I'm not sure how I can reply to myself, so I just edit my own post. Aftter viewing a video on Youtube (sorry, can't post links...), I realised you can actually throw rocks at the enemies! I feel absolutely stupid for not thinking of that. This changes everything as I now understand more clearly the dynamics of the encounters in this game, and how it's meant to be played. A quick test allowed me to easy-ishly kill two orcs and a lizard in a row. Problem solved!

haha yes stones are quite useful, especially early in the game :D i played legend of grimrock before LoL1 so i automatically knew what to do with them

Remember the "dungeon crawler dance"! ;)

Enemies are always slow enough to make you able to use corridors, corners, doors or just to dance around them - step forward, hit, step back etc. I always wonder if any of dungeon crawler may be completed without using (abusing?) that weak spots of such games' mechanics.
I accidentaly used the stones early on in the game and was surprised with their effect. Mandatory, especially in the first 2, 3 areas.
