We continue the retrospective by David Craddock about Roberta Williams' King's Quest saga in the third part of "From Monochrome to Monarchy" series of articles.
Having relocated the setting of King's Quest II from Daventry to another magical realm, Roberta Williams' colleagues at Sierra On-Line, as well as the computer adventure game community at large, weren't too worried upon learning that King's Quest III: To Heir is Human would not take place in Daventry. After all, players had once again been transported into the adventure-worn boots of King Graham for King's Quest II -- as long as Graham's familiar face was available to guide them, they would eagerly take on any quest constructed by the "Queen of the Graphic Adventure."

i think we expected other news ( new release for today ) instead of this
This just in! The Baldur's Gate series and Planescape Torment released on GOG.com!
k Now that I've woken from my dream... I remember playing both versions of KQ4. While the graphics were quite advanced for an AGI title, it was definitely an impressive upgrade seeing the improved visuals and listening to the MT-32 sound of the SCI version. :)

Ugh, you haven't even given us KQ 1,2 & 3 yet. Is this a hint that they are coming soon? And what about KQ 7 & 8?
stop complaining and go finish the games you already own! :D
and I'll try to read all parts when I get the chance... ;)
Thanks, great reading, as usual.
So you have articles on King's Quest 1-3 but haven't released them yet? That's so odd. I mean, KQ 4-6 are on here. Also please get 7 and 8 (even though it sucks) on here!
I love seeing these GOG. Please keep'em coming.
Hello GOGers,
After discussing it with GOG, I decided to start this series of retrospectives at the beginning of Sierra's history because I felt it would have been awkward to start with KQ4 just because that was the earliest entry in the series that GOG had acquired. Kind of like opening a book in the middle and starting to read from there.
I'm sorry if including the history of KQ1-3's development threw anyone off, but again, it was included for the sake of completeness. Regardless, I am glad you seem to be enjoying the trip down game development history lane.
Take care, and happy gaming!

I think the articles have been great. Very interesting. I can't wait to hear the rest of the story. Thanks.

You're absolutely right. No story would ever begin with episode 4. Certainly not Star Wars. Oh, heavens no. :d
P. S. I am not criticizing the quality of your delightful retrospectives.
Excellent article, as usual. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the article, really nice to read.
Quote: "Many players have even confessed that the wizard's random, abrupt, and chilling appearances still haunt them years after King's Quest III's release."
This was one reason I stopped playing and never finished it. I know from Space Quest you need to save every minute and restart often, but it was very, very, very and very annoying when you here this sounds from the coming wizard.
Regardless if we have the games in the catalogue now or now, I do enjoy reading these.
Why haven't we seen a release of QUEST FOR GLORY by now? It is almost impossible to get them to work on modern-day PC's (aside from the one freeware remake of part 2). I've already bought all the Space Quests' and Kings Quests' from GOG and Steam, now I'd like to get the best of them all, the QFG series!
Is Activision the one holding this up?
