Terraria has one of these threads and Kerbal needs one. Every time I play I come up with more stupid questions and observations so I'm throwing down this thread for all of us.

To get things started, has anyone ever actually tried to go to the sun?

No. That sounds like a fun probe mission, though!
I did burn a probe by taking it too close to the sun, yeah.

Since we are in the general discussion thread, how do you ship your rovers ? Would I would like is to store my rovers in a container, so their aerodynamics don't matter, and open the container once my rocket arrives to destination (and use parachutes or small retrorocket to land the rover). But I never managed it... and the whole editor seems to handle poorly having a rocket and a rover at once :s So if anyone has tips on that, I would be glad to hear them.

I've used two methods to lift (heavy) rovers. The first one was resigning myself to deal with strong asymetry. It took some careful piloting but I managed to simply take-off with a big rover at the rear of my rover. Landing on the target required to tilt my lander at the last moment so that it would fall on itse side, wheels down. This was the insanity model (see pic).

The second method was a symetrical build. The rocket was plugged under the rover, instead of behind it. With a symetrical enough rover, this made for a stable (though drag-unfriendly) rocket. It also allowed for a regular landing (wheels down, instead of "sideways"), and the ability to get back up. That's the madness model (see pic).

With smaller, lighter rovers, it matters less. Cw8 (another kerbal player on this forum) simply attached a tiny rover to one of the three symetrical fuel canisters that were around his thruster. No problem with that apparently.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try doing things like that next time I enter a KSP phase (I've "KSP phases" that start and stop :p).

if the rover is small enough can you attach it below your lander and put it into the protective shell thingie. That way you don't have to worry about aerodynamics.

like this

though the smaller rovers tend to be rather frustrating to operate because they flip so easily.
(the rover in the picture is particularly bad due to his high center of mass)

The protective shell thingies are a mod, aren't they ?

Or have I been overlooking a whole core functionality all this time ? Again ?

there used to be a mod for that, but then the devs decided to make it one of the shiny new features in 1.0 ;)

you can find them in the aerodynamics tab, among the nosecones, wings, etc
They are really neat because you can actually freely edit their shape to fit your payload. And after exiting the atmosphere you break off/seperate the shell and can access your payload.
(just like in real life ;) )

Oooh. Indeed.

I never unlock the "airplane" tech tree elements (with the wings and all that), so, I do not have the option in my hangar, that may be why I never realised that vanilla KSP included these.

Now that is something that would make my rockets look way less dumb. Which is good news. In a way.
Silly question:
When I'm in the hanger building, does time go by? I'd kind of like to know because sometimes I get pulled away for long periods and it would be embarrassing to look at my logs and see it took me three days to put one rocket on on capsule. :P
