So, I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy it. I could care less about the price or whether or not people think BG is better than Icewind, so check that noise at the door.

My main concern is whether or not the ruleset has changed any. I believe the original was 2nd Edition but I read that EE adds something like 30 new kits or some such nonsense. I've been away from DnD for a long time and learned, from Icewind Dale 2 that my brain gets all sideways when trying to figure out feats and kits and combinations and I can't even seem to make an average party in ID2. So the worry is if a newer ruleset and new character creation mechanics will be a frustrating experience for a game I loved so much.

I do still have a copy of the original hanging around somewhere, but an update would be nice. But would the frustration level be too high for someone who doesn't necessarily have the time to learn the intricacies of a new ruleset?
There is no new ruleset, from what I've seen in game it's still the good old AD&D 2nd edition rules. Hell, if they changed it to 3rd edition rules as in IWD2, I wouldn't go near that crap. There is one exception however, you can do backstabbing with rogues that works as a 3rd edition rules, but that's an option that can be turned off in gameplay settings.

Regarding 3rd edition feats, I (with considerable satisfaction) didn't see any of those anywhere in the game, and as for kits, there is no need to use any of the exotic new kits if you don't want to, just stick to your old familiar guns (as I do) and the game will still work as intended. There is a ton of new spells, imported from BG1&2:EE, but they're all supposed to be of AD&D2ndE variety.

So get your copy and enjoy the monster bashing and an awesome soundtrack ;-)

The ruleset hasn't changed and is still firmly 2e, just like the original. Most of the new kits are from BG2 so you're likely already familiar with them. The remainder are unique to the EE series of games, but they're still not terribly different from the existing kits and remain firmly in the 2e rules.

IWDEE, like IWD, does introduce a handful of 3e rules. There's an option to use sneak attack/critical strike instead of normal thief backstab. Thieves also receive evasion, a 3e perk, as part of their class progression--evasion means thieves can avoid damage entirely from area effect spells on saves instead of just taking half damage.

Unless the Ehanced Edition actually fixed it what was a crippling engine limitation even for IWD2 that somewhat fully utilized 3E rules, don't expect Sneak Attack to actually work like it should. I doubt they manged to fix the problems, really, because the engine isn't capable of telling when enemies are actually flanked and SA should apply. :)

Would be nice it if really worked though, might make me buy the EE.
Awesome. thanks guys!
To those mentioning sneak attack being in IWD EE

IWD is an undead heavy game and I remember that they are immune to backstab and critical hits. Are they also immune to sneak attacks as well? If so, adding such a feature could largely be redundant.
So then. Is there something worthwhile added? Something removed?
I'm a bit stingy and won't buy EE for the going price, but if (like OP) we are to ignore the price, are there any bigger pros or cons for going with EE.

Is the added content any good?
Bug fixes vs new bugs?
New interface is better than old?

While BG2 (and ToB especially) handed out backstab immunity to pretty much everyone, only constructs (golems, sentries, and the like) are immune in IWD and IWDEE. Creatures vulnerable to backstab are also vulnerable to sneak attacks and critical strikes.

Much of the new content is from my mods, so I'll give a heavily biased yes on #1. While some content is exclusive to IWDEE, some is also available via mod for IWD.

There are a ton of bug fixes beyond what IWD + IWD Fixpack provides.

The new interface provides new features such as instant save/load, quick loot, zoom, and a lot of other enhancements.

All that being said, whether that's "worth it" to you is not something I can really answer.
I am also very tempted to buy. Does the multiplayer work seamlessly between all platforms?
Sneak attack was added in the Heart of Winter expansion pack, and is not new to the EE.

AFAIK the only 3e stuff added by the EE are classes (Barbarian, Monk, and Sorcerer).
- Does The EE include both expansions?

- If you want to play IWD with the 3rd edition DnD rules, there is a mod for NWN2. Somebody rebuild the whole IWD game (without expansions).

- I will not buy the EE. I already own the old game and I have not finished it yet.

Yes, it appears to - see this thread;

From their FAQ:

Q: Is there any DLC for Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition?

A: There are no additional in-app purchases required to access all of the content in Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition. Play the entire game with all its features, no matter what platform you're playing it on.

Oops, I was either looking at something else or I read that when it was late and wasn't paying attention, the latter being the most likely. Thanks for pointing that out. I should really stop posting in the forums when it's late.
