Thank you great and mighty gaming oracles!
I have acer aspire one with windows 7 and I had success with setting the affinity to cpu1 in task manager:
opening the game, returning to windows while the game is still running, opening the task manager and right clicking on the homm3 entry and setting affinity to cpu1. setting to cpu0 still crashed for some reason. i did not use the imagecfg program. Yes, I have to do this each time I run the game but since it no longer crashes every 10 minutes, this is MUCH less troublesome. Thanks again for the good ideas!

The suggestion from CRW, reiterated by Angelunaware (which is a repost of rampart3 from another forum), requires a minor change to your workflow for starting the game, but provides a third-party-free way of using CPU affinity without the extra step of switching to task manager every time you start. As Angelunaware said, create the batch file with that command, create a shortcut to that batch file, and then use that shortcut instead of the GOG native shortcut. No post-startup switching will be required, because the batch file will set the affinity at startup.
The batch file idea sounds awesome, thanks!
Now here's a "noob" question:

Is there any way to avoid the "Allow Heroes3.exe to make changes to this computer" message from being displayed?

I'm currently running on Windows 10, BTW

Go to the Control Panel, then User Accounts.

Change User Account Control Settings -> pull the slider down to the bottom (Never notify) -> OK.

Angelunaware: Now start HOMM3 with a shortcut to this 'Heroes3.bat' file. The advantage of this is that once set up, you can just play without thinking further about it.

I have 20 hours of no-problem play since doing this, half on a Vista laptop, and half on a Windows 7 desktop.

(Another tip that works: I keep all HOMM3 files on a USB stick so I can continue a game on any computer without bothering to install it again.)
I've been having troubles with my heroes 3 complete and I'm going to try this method. Im getting an error when setting up the shortcut to that "heroes3.bat"

it says the file is not valid. Where and how do i set up the short cut properly?

Angelunaware: I found this on another forum. I applied this fix and it works! no more crashing!! This post was done by rampart3, I do not take credit for this fix:

On Win7, I had crashes to desktop about once an hour. Changing it to XP SP3 compatibility mode caused it to lock up in the repeating sound loop about once an hour. What did work was to run on one core with NO compatibility mode set.

To make this easy to do once set up, in the same directory as Heroes3.exe, I created a new text file called 'Heroes3.bat'. Into this 'Heroes3.bat' file, paste the following three-line script:

@echo off
start /wait /affinity 1 Heroes3.exe
exit

Now start HOMM3 with a shortcut to this 'Heroes3.bat' file. The advantage of this is that once set up, you can just play without thinking further about it.

I have 20 hours of no-problem play since doing this, half on a Vista laptop, and half on a Windows 7 desktop.

If you mean set the shortcut to heroes3.bat, then simply right click on the existing shortcut, click "Properties" and under "Target" change it to heroes3.bat instead of the exe.
ZFR salutations... followed your instructions and hit the proverbial brick wall. any suggestions. my skill set is nowhere near yours. cheers

Is the file actually called heroes3.bat in that folder?

Anyway, what you could do is right-click-drag the .bat file into your desktop, and then from the menu that appears, select "Create shortcut here". That will save a shortcut on the desktop that you can then move/copy anywhere else.

Also, try reinstalling the game outside Program Files.
many thanks.
i have been playing this for years.
it is going to be strange not having the "interruptions".

Apologies, i didn't answer the the question.
The file in "target" was "C:\Program Files (x86)\3DO\Heroes 3 Complete\HEROES3.EXE"

How do you install the game outside Program Files.

When you run the GOG installer, there is an Options button (usually bottom left in latest GOG installers). Click, then select a different folder.
