16:9 mode in this version is awful. This is a warning: The game was NOT remastered to professionally support 16:9 resolutions, although it has the option to show the game in 16:9.
It looks okay in 4:3.

Also, apparently the ps4-pad is now the default windows-pad. When playing with controller (i am playing with Xbox one pad) the game shows you Playstation-Buttons(icons) instead of xbox Buttons, and even the controller-menu shows a ps4-pad.
I already opened a support case regarding this problem.

In addition, I don't see a big difference between original and remastered-mode. Remastered-mode just seems to add anti-aliasing and smoothes everything a little bit, but it doesn't do much if you ask me.

To sum this up, i think Double fine (again...) did a very mediocre job on this. Compatibility to a modern OS and Audio-Commentary from the Devs make it worth playing though.
Yes, 16:9 is awful. The game just zooms in.
It was stressed by Double Fine in the making of videos (and I think forums and elsewhere) that the game would not be remastered to support widescreen resolutions. They would not extend the backgrounds to support this or re-record the cutscenes.

The best way to play the game, remains the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

I do. I keep switching back and forth, and the remastered version looks really nice. The dynamic shadows and cleared up textures help very much. Also the cutscenes don't seem to have many (or any) compression artifacts, like they did in the original.

I am of the opinion, that a 2015 remaster has to support 16:9 resolution natively. The new Resident Evil HD Remaster was remastered to support 16:9 natively with extended backgrounds, and it really helped making it a better game.
They (DF) basically announced that they are not doing a proper remaster.

And yes, the cutscenes do look much better!

Right, saw the 4:3 screenshots and came here to see is there any info about widescreen.

Good job Double Fine, bravo. I'm still going to buy the game because Grim Fandango, but if DF won't bother to do a good remaster, then I won't bother to pay full price.

Will wait for sale.

I believe the use of Playstation icons rather than Xbox icons is attributable to the fact that the game is PS4 exclusive on console. Chances are they just used those because they were making a version using those already.

I think everyone is of the opinion that any game supporting widescreen resolutions should do so without zooming or stretching and anyone with a widescreen monitor would like to see flawless widescreen support from their favorite games.

However, Double Fine decided against this (to maintain the original look, and probably because the amount of work, time and resources that would be required could not be justified - not to mention having to consistently recreate the exact art for each and every one of the backgrounds in order to extend them).

This seems to have been a decision early in the process, because it is mentioned in the first of the making of videos, which was released since last summer.

Wrong. The game was properly remastered to respect the intended 4:3 aspect ratio. The game and respective artwork and assets were never made for widescreen resolutions. The streched option is available for those who want to play it that way. You're not obliged to.

No it doesn't. It stretches the game to fill the screen. It doesn't zoom anything in.

You are right, it indeed would be a lot of work to create this. But, if Crapcom (a company that shits on the opinion of their Fanbase since many years) is able to deliver a really good remaster like Resident Evil HD Remaster, why can't DF?

I mean, the Grim Fandango Remaster is still a good game, I enjoy playing it so far, but a game like this also does not deserve a sloppy Remaster.

They just did.

So being faithful to the original concept is being 'sloppy'?! Wow.
Awwww man!

I just bought Metropolis and it doesn't come in 16:9 widescreen. WHY?!
The Artist won an oscar? Bullshit!

Grim Fandango was designed and thought on 4:3, that's it.
Comparing it to Age of Empires remasters is senseless. One is a graphic adventure, a genre with a story and a strong image composition. The other, an strategy game where all they need to do is to show more map. The same goes for shooters and so.

Hope I helped to solve your problem.
I've been playing the first chapter in 4:3 with the grey detailed side bars and i think it looks pretty neat and very acceptable.
Real 16:9 backgrounds would look wierd in a few locations (the elevator in chapter 2 for example) and it would also mean, since the room layout is made for 4:3, that they'd have to change many room layouts or camera change triggers.

Remember: this is a remaster, not a remake, and if the backgrounds were rendered in 4:3 then remastering means using these original backgrounds and trying to imrove them. Comverting the backgrounds to 16:9 would need alot of redrawing/re-rendering/rebuilding and would not be a remaster but a remake, which is a slight difference.

Probably because resident evil was a lot more 3D and the texture where often dark walls which is a lot easier to extend.
I didn't find any problems with the aspect ratio as long as it's something you can configure. I like to keep it at 4:3, but I personally didn't like that the remaster still uses the original models instead of something like "Grim Fandango Deluxe". the 3D models in that mod look awesome, it would have been great to have them in the remastered version. Of course it requires a lot of work to do that, but it would have been awesome. Too bad they missed the chance, I hope the guys from the mod keep working on it. It was paused when the remastered was announced, but it wasn't that good after all..
