I was just curious if any of you guys that have been testing Windows 7 could tell me if the old game Nocturne can made to be run on it ?
I haven't had much luck on xp so any news that it would again be playable on Windows 7 would be very good news.

I just tried to install this on VMware Player with Windows 98 first edition.

I patched W98 using a compilation patch to SP2 I found online.

The game installed generally fine but now it simply will not launch. There is a split second black screen starting it up.

This is strange as I have it also installed on XP x64 VM that actually launches but doesn't run with hardware acceleration turned on in the game's options for hardware. I get a black screen turning that on. This is unfortunate as you can only set 640x480 resolution with software resolution.

I suppose I can install a basic version of W98 without any patches (should have tried it on this install first) in VMware Player but I am too tired right now to continue.

BTW who marked this thread as "solved"? The OP was talking about Windows 7 yet the so called "solver" was talking about Windows XP.

Well I got it to "work" on Windows 7 64-bit with AMD Radeon HD 7970.

I used DXGL (https://www.williamfeely.info/wiki/DXGL#Downloads). Installed it and copied the ddraw.dll from the DXGL folder to the Nocturne directory.

The menu lag is bad and the intro video is black (only audio). Additional I get the "No 3D hardware detected" in the graphics options.

With DXGL you can activate "Aspect corrected stretch" to stretch the game to the whole screen.

I have patched Nocturne with nocpatch2.exe

That's cool you can get it working at all. The intro is black because it uses some really old video codec that I can't remember off the top of my head (Inno I think it's called). I got the installer for it some place since I still play the game on my old XP system.

It's the Ligos Indeo Codec. Can't get it installed on Windows 7 though. But opening the "video\opening.avi" directly works.

Edit:
Tested some other direct3d 7 wrappers:
DXWnd 3D (3D Hardware On): Intro playing, Windowed, Crash in first 3d scene
D3DWindower (3D Hardware On): Intro playing, Windowed, Sound messed up, Game playing
