Bonjour et bienvenue sur GOG.com!

We're happy to announce that the site is now available in the native tongue of Molière, ‎Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Honoré de Balzac, Jules Verne, and René Goscinny! Here, at GOG.com we're always trying to make DRM-free entertainment more accesible to gamers around the world. Haha, I know. I thought it was obvious enough I was joking (I did say "us belgians", so you can assume I know what my country language is). Now that I think about it, if you don't speak French, it's less obvious. But still.

I'm actually from Belgium, and French is my first language. I just love joking about our fake "belgian" tongue.

True, if GOG uses IP based systems and shows me a spanish-written webpage I swear that I will never buy a game again from them. It´s extemely hateful when, for example, google play only allows me to download some translated apps on my mobile phone.

I agree. It's also annoying when you DO want the site to be in French, but it's not since you're based in another country.

Haha, I don't want to be a grammar nazi or whatever (I'm sure I make some awful mistakes in English), but this is really funny when you speak French.

Just to explain, I assume you meant something similar to "well done" ? True, it's the litteral translation and in a more complete sentence it could mean just that (it works for a steak :D ), but the formula "bien fait" alone in French has a meaning closer to "sucks to be you" or "that's what you get". The way you wrote it, especially with the exclamation point /instinctively/ reads like that.

I swear, I'm not saying that to be a jerk and blame you for making a mistake (again, you could take revenge). I usually wouldn't care, but this is just funny. :D

Ha! My bad, then - I did say I don't speak French, so I guess I've demonstrated the truth of that statement. I actually understand a great deal of it, but speaking it is a whole 'nother matter.

What would be the appropriate thing to say, since "Sucks to be you" was not really my intent? (Though sometimes I do think that about the GOGfolk, given all the whining around here lately.)

I only had 2 years of French at the age of 13 and 14. Then I was not able to continue to learn French because it was not a class I could choose. Nobody liked French and so there were no students willing to take it. Consequently the choice was taken away so it was impossible to choose it. I know a few phrases and I recognise a couple of words in sentences but that's about it.

Also, seeng as french is your first language? Did you ever learn to speak Dutch? I hear that most french speaking belgians just refuse to learn Dutch while the Dutch speaking Belgians have to learn french and are expected to speak it. I guess you'd call it a double standard.

But from what I know French was the language of elitists in Belgium and Dutch the language of the common folk that the elitists tried to exterminate.

Just for the anecdote, "bien fait" (basically "serves you right", indeed) is also how the french version of trivial pursuit congratulated the winner, on the amiga. Was highly confusing.

I would say "bien joué" ("well played"), to stay within the two words sentences. There the meaning is the same everywhere, you'd take less risks.

I wasn't trying to bring up this debate, honestly. I just wanted to make my bad joke clear. But for the story, I live in Brussels (physically located in Flanders but with something like 80% of French speakers, you can imagine the mess), and we are supposed to learn Dutch in schools. The thing is about every student ever hate it. It's moslty the way it sounds and the lack of interest (and the teachers, lol). Nothing against it particularly. And I think it's the same on both sides.

I don't think there really is a hate to learn the language itself. The politics are just a giant mess. But as for the people, there's just not any interest to learn about the other side of the country. What you speak of (the elitist French and such) were true, but it's from the beginning of the 20th century were French was synonym of "bourgeoisie" (don't know the English word) and the Dutch were physical workers. It's not really relevant anymore.

I just wonder why French. Is it because the french hate English? (and refuse to speak to you if you come to their country?) I suppose Spanish will be next. At least French can speak English. A lot of Spanish speaking people can't even speak English.

Also not trying to discriminate. Just stating my observations.
