16 extra content packs coming free for everyone!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the RPG epic with a mature, non-linear story drawn from player's decisions, a vast multi-region open world acting like a living ecosystem, dynamic and tactical combat, and stunning visuals, is now available for pre-orders, up to 20% off (including special loyalty discount), on GOG.com! The game comes out on February 24, 2015, but it's today that CD PROJEKT RED & GOG.com would like to announce that it will be followed by 16 DLCs available to all gamers, regardless of their platform of choice.

Why are we doing this? Here's an open letter from someone many of you know quite well already, Marcin Iwiński, co-founder and Joint CEO of CD PROJEKT RED:

We love games. We love collecting them, playing them, and everything connected to that experience. Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of. We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn't have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character, or an extra sword, or armor.

Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days. As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialize with a steep price tag attached. Haven’t we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game?

As CD PROJEKT RED, we strongly believe this is not the way it should work and, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we have decided to do it differently. Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform. You don’t have to pre-order, you don’t have to buy any special edition to get them -- if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they’re yours. This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game.

There you have it, folks! There's very little to add to Marcin's words except: Pre-order today, and prepare for an RPG experience worthy of the best traditions of the genre, and taking it to a whole new level! The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available up to 20% off, packed with bonus content on GOG.com, and will receive 16 free DLCs after release. Check out the pre-order page for the bonus content details and your local pricing.

Evilbeefjerky: For a couple of new items? Come on.

Lamenting how a mediocre game can be sold by a smooth silver tongue.

Randalator: That's quite the fancy way to admit you're a troll...
I'm a troll because I dislike CDPR and their ability to sell their overrated games based entirely on them exploiting how crappy and nakedly greedy the AAA game industry is?

If the game industry is a den of thieves and crooks, CDPR is the guy who walks up to you and says he will not, in fact, steal your wallet. And you're so grateful for this that you eagerly purchase his foul tasting gruel and call it ice cream.

BadDecissions: Let's say that I believe that if they really wanted to put the beard pack in the base game, they could have done so. It might not have been literally cut (i.e. finished, then removed), but I absolutely believe that CDPRed made the conscious decision to leave stuff out of the game so that they could then announce it as DLC.
In order not to push back the release date, yes. Just like other companies do with their day-1(?) DLC. Except that in this case, the DLC is offered for free. Your problem seems to be that CDPR uses this as a PR stunt, that they offer this extra stuff free? Bad bad CDPR, don't make yourself look so good!

At some point you just have to stop adding new features/content to the product in order to get the first version out; and no, it doesn't happen just a week, or necessarily even a month, before the release, with a product of any serious complexity, like I'm pretty sure The Witcher 3 is.

So on GOG.com, anybody who criticises CDPR = troll.
Good to know. I swear, if it wasn't for Alpha Centauri I wouldn't even visit this site.

Evilbeefjerky: Even if it's entirely cosmetic and any bug fixing regarding it's integration could be done within a day by someone with the skill of an average Skyrim modder? Please.
I hope you don't work in professional SW development.

Anyway, looking at your other messages, you seem to have some huge chip on your shoulder against CDPR, so I guess you just need to vent out, and in any case you'd fail to see anything good in their actions.
Sweet news.
Kudos to the CDPR mates-

Evilbeefjerky: A beard and a couple of outfits they already have in-game footage of aren't ready for release?
Sure that could probably be included on release but I honestly don't care as I wouldn't bother playing a game with free DLC until all was made available and included in the purchased version. Obviously, a DLC has to include something extra so it's quite possible they may have chosen to omit some of the purely cosmetic add-ons and instead include them in a DLC.
It does seem like overkill to announce a whopping 16 additional content packages but since they're free I can't get my knickers in a twist over it.

Nope, it's how you do it...
although ill be paying the premium us.aussies will pay for this game, I do find yes.they are great devs but why getting dlc anyway????. any story based material should be part of base game or a future proper expansion. anything else is unnecessary

I make no attempt to hide my dislike of CDPR, true.
I'm merely saying I consider this another in their long line of disingenuous and manipulative actions, and expressing my frustration that so many are again falling for it.
avatar
Evilbeefjerky: Okay, sure. So that'll take what? A week at most? Hey I'll be generous and say it takes 1 whole month to integrate 1 suit of armour in the game.
It's still 3 months to release and 2 months to finalisation (according to you). I'd say there's enough time.
You make it sound as if the base game were already completely finished and they were just sitting around and waiting for the game's release before they start working on the DLC. Nobody outside of CDP (with maybe a few exceptions) has any way to know in what state the game currently is, how the manpower is allocated, what the schedule exactly looks like etc., don't act as if you did. :P

Nice condescending tone there. Sorry if I don't let you decide for me what I value in a game or a gaming company.

I hope CDPR and GOG keep "manipulating" me by raising the bar for the gaming industry. Making me feel good about my purchases is the best way to keep me as a customer.
You are the best guys!
