Elenarie: Aren't you a student? They make huge sales for students.

Better? :D
Yes, doesn't mean I still don't get screwed :D
This is where I'll get my daily dosage from now on.
I already have a Windows partition for work, a Windows partition for games and a third Windows partition for games that uses clients and online DRMs (Steam, Origin & Co.), no way I have a fourth partition for application that uses Steam....

...but then again the only apps I use being Visual Studio, Office and Outlook so I doubt that will appear on Steam anytime soon.
The risks of being locked out of your day-to-day applications, or worse things like tax and accounting software are far more serious than games. Until Steam has a properly functioning offline mode with access to your stuff in the event of account issues, I wouldn't consider buying any applications from it. Which pretty much means never with how the SSA is setup.

I don't give a damn. I want to maintain my programs to my liking, including updates. Sometimes updating a program can have bad consequences, like incompatibility with your hardware. No thank you, Valve.

Good thing you can turn off Steam's automatic updating then, huh?

But can you turn it off for one game and not overall?

EDIT
Just checked it, yes, you can disable it for one game.

Yes, each game (and I guess application now too) has it's own update setting.
It doesn't seem like many people are keen on this from what I've read on news story comments and forum discussions.
Didn't Steam expand beyond games when they released Myst? :P

Well, I really don't see anything to be excited about here. Not until the launch lineup is made public, in any case, but I don't expect to be thrilled by the idea even then.

Pretty much every decision Valve made in the last year or so has had me thinking I'd really appreciate if they finished HL3 instead.
I.....don't care really. Most of the productivity stuff I use doesn't get updated or handles checking on it's own, I don't have much of a use for a strong photo editor so whatever dinky thing I find for free works. Open Office has been a godsend for years, and everything else I can find something through friends. I'm just not as interested.

Now if Steam support would get back to me, I think I'd be a happy person.

Turning off automatic updates does not really fix the problem though. Yes, it keeps the game/product from updating on it's own as soon as a patch is released, but once you try to launch that game/product, Steam will still force you to update at that point. So unless they change things, you will always be forced to run the latest version.
funny, didn't stardock already do this with impulse?
