Showing you how government works, in case yours doesn't!
Speaking from one organization that has had an unpopular shutdown to another: America. What are you doing? America? Stahp.

Shutdowns are never popular, and all of the polls show that this is not a big hit with most Americans either. Americans may be looking for something fun to do, since all their parks are closed for the moment. Thankfully your favorite purveyor of digital games is here to help. It occurs to us that one of the problems may be that there are people on Capitol Hill who don't know what a functioning government looks like, so we thought we'd help and point a few out with a special 24-hour 50% off Shutdown Promo.

The Guild: Gold Edition is a great place to see where the term "Machiavellian Politics" originated from. If you're looking to find a land where earning power was the key to success in the political arena, look no further. Meanwhile, in Capitalism Plus and Capitalism 2, you can get the best economic sims that money can buy half off and see for yourself how a demand economy functions. Tropico Reloaded is 50% off as a reminder of what can happen when governments go awry, and Alpha Centauri (with the Alien Crossfire expansion!) has more different styles of governments modeled than you can shake a stick at. So, really, these games are a quick lesson in civic government. Because we're concerned for you guys.

There has been a lot of furor over health care in America leading up to this shutdown, and we think it's a shame so many people are upset about medicine and how to treat each other. To help further our educational mission for this promo, we figured we'd put Theme Hospital in the sale as well, because that way you can judge for yourself just how tricky it can be to balance the needs of sick patients against limited budgets. Finally, for reasons entirely unrelated to who may or may not have been involved in shutting down the US Government, we also appear to have Redneck Rampage on sale 50% off.

Finally, we would like to express our condolences to everyone who's been furloughed by the shutdown. More than that, actually, we'd like to offer you the games pack of our special Shutdown Promo for free. Send an email to thanksobama@gog.com with your picture holding the official furlough letter you received, before Friday 11 October 2013 at 12:00 EDT and we'll give you The Guild: Gold Edition, Capitalism, Capitalism 2, Tropico: Gold Edition, Alpha Centauri + Alien Crossfire, Theme Hospital, and Redneck Rampage free.

We hope the games will keep you all occupied while you're waiting for someone on Capitol Hill to get their act together. Meanwhile, get The Guild, Capitalism Plus, Capitalism 2, Tropico: Gold Edition, Alpha Centauri + Alien Crossfire, Theme Hospital, and Redneck Rampage 50% off (or free if you met the requirements above), in our special Shutdown Promo! The offer lasts until Thursday, October 10, at 12:59PM GMT.
Ok this promo is hilarious! I LOL'd hard when you add Redneck Rampage in the promo. I see what you did there!
Nice promo.
Link to the promo on the product page isn't working .

Maighstir: *Shrug* people should stop getting their panties in a twist and start making sure their data is properly backed up rather than hoping online services keep it available indefinitely.
All my purchases are downloaded and backed up, but I still don't want GOG to shutdown, ever.

Well, it's not so much that (I do keep my stuff well backed-up, and I can only shake my head in disbelief at people going on about how the "internet is their backup source") but rather that GOG is the only site at the moment that really seems to give half a shit about enforcing a DRM-free policy while also offering decent games.

ShinyLoot looks like an interesting alternative, but my bet is they won't last a year.

tinyE: Excuse my language, but what a TOTALLY FUCKING BRILLIANT IDEA!!!! I don't even go for the games, but the creativity and sense of humor that went into this makes me cry tears of joy and tears of laughter.

Now as I said I don't normally go for games like this, in fact you may recognize me from my profile on America's Most Wanted; I made the FBI's ten most wanted because I don't like Alpha Centauri. That being said I'm keen to take a look at The Guild, but I need a strait answer, is it playable for stupid people like myself?
Let's see. Do you want a straight answer to that or would you like to be lied to? Normally I would say YES, you can play it but I'm a little unsure of you mental capacity. (that's a tiny joke) If you have trouble keeping track of your bank account, even with all of the easy online instant-show info available then you NEVER want to play a game like this, you might break your comp. into tiny bits in frustration. (another tiny joke) That being said if you ever played a tiny game like SimCity and did ok on it then you should be OK. (another). So, what's the E?
Way to keep it classy, thanks for the laugh XD

I second RedRagan, nice touch throwing in Redneck Rampage

Certainly not, I was referring to the out-of-beta PR cup, which I assume jamyskis also referred to. The far most common sign of anger was "I was afraid I lost all my games, stop scaring us like that" which was completely unnecessary if people had actually downloaded their purchases (though the temporary page did clearly state that the games would be available for download again, people just went into panic mode directly and stopped reading before that statement).

I'm not too bad at SimCity, for a slum lord, so looks like a buy. :D
Thanks for this.
I am online for less than hour today and this is second amazing thing I've already seen. Hopefully it's not the end of great internet day. :-)
Yep, taking a picture of your Gov ID is a bad idea. Depending on where you work you could get fired or worse for doing that. Free games aren't worth that risk.
Thank you GoG for reminding me how inane my government truly is. And in particular, thank you for choosing Redneck Rampage as a game to represent. I think I will go shove my head in a hole somewhere, why not, most American's do....
Again a nice promo, again The Guild with 50% off and again....no German language available. I assume German won't be added anytime soon, which is a shame because after all the game was made in Austria/Germany.
IIRC the Gothic games on gog had no German language on release either but it was added later on. I'll skip the promo and hope that my original CDs of The Guild won't break in the near future. ;_;
More world-events-taken-with-a-bit-of-humor promos, please! This one is great!

...Redneck Rampage, Capitalism, The Guild... what a funny image made of videogames!
