The secret life of the Red Planet.

Waking Mars, an original platform game that focuses on free-form jetpack-aided exploration of the Martian underground, is now available 50% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.99 for a whole week!

For all we know, the life that we know didn't start here, on Earth. One of the theories says that the spark that kick-started the evolution in the primordial ocean came from outer space and it points to our nearest neighbor as its probable source. Mars wasn't necessarily always covered with arid deserts and infertile rock. Unmanned missions, like the one carried out by Curiosity Mars Rover, gather more and more proof that the surface of the Red Planet used to be blue, green, and very much alive. Life on Mars. Maybe it's not entirely gone? Maybe someday humans will touch the red dust with their own feet and feel a pulse coming deep from the underground--a sign, that Mars is waking.

In Waking Mars the fantasy of living Mars becomes your reality. However, not everything goes as planned with the first contact expedition, and you become trapped in the giant underground system of caves and corridors. Using your space-suit's jetpack you have to explore your surroundings, learn the dependencies of the Martian ecosystem, and figure out how to use the alien creatures and plants in your advantage. Your survival depends on your ability to adapt, in this unique game filled with eerie beauty and unknown danger. On GOG.com, the game comes with a bonus MP3 soundtrack filled with many great electronica tunes guaranteed to bring high-quality Sci-Fi ambiance into your day.

So, what are you still doing here on Earth? Shouldn't you be Waking Mars by now, for only $4.99 on GOG.com? The offer lasts until Tuesday, March 12, at 10:59AM GMT.

sirdilznik: This looks like a Metroidvania type game, is that about right?
No. It's more of a gardening / ecosystem simulation.

bansama: Perhaps I'm the only one, but having played the iOS version, I'd never touch this piece of crap. The game is utterly terrible. Especially the appalling English that was present in the iOS one. I notice GOG have not used a single screen shot that shows how annoying that English is when the "AI" is talking. Or did they remove that crap from the PC version?
The AI's language module was sabotaged as a joke. It's explained several times throughout the game.
Before i send this as a question to support has anyone tried out the gog version ? as the sound effects are really low on my computer even when i've turned them to full and lowered the music and speech in the settings options, i still have to really crank my speakers up and even then i cannot hear the jetpac at all.

I must have missed that. But it still doesn't change my opinion of the game much. I didn't like it.
Looks interesting. Wishted
I played through this game recently and I really liked it a lot. It's one of the few ports from mobile devices that is an actual game, rather than a simple toy or distraction.

I'm pretty sure that it's not to everyone's taste, but I also think it's a game that is easy for people to judge prematurely. While the story and gameplay mechanics are definitely pretty simple, they also have some depth to them that you might not expect when you just look at the screenshots.

And it's definitely at least a bit different. It's a game where you play a scientist, but for once it's not one where the scientist inexplicably become an action hero carrying a large arsenal of guns. Instead of shooting things your main interaction with the world is planting seeds, tending to an ecosystem where all the different lifeforms interact with each other. You need to discover and study those interactions in order to determine what to do and how to solve the puzzles of the game.

What didn't you like about it? I was thinking of picking this one up a few weeks ago on Desura, and now that this is on GOG at 50% off, I'm even more tempted to.
Oh, nice new releases :)

One of the ex-Looking Glass employees, Randy Smith, is working in Tiger Style.

Also, completely unrelated, Thief 4 was finally covered by gameinformer today.

The first section doesn't convey the interaction between the different creatures that develops later on.
I remember seeing this title in stores forever ago when I was younger, and I always wondered what it was... Same goes for Martian (Prophecy) or something like that? It's got like a face in an astronaut suit or something on the cover but it looks kind of creepy...
Looks like aquaria in space.

I love Aquaria, but this game plays quite differently, although you might compare the different seeds that you have in Waking Mars with the forms of Aquaria, Later on micro-management is necessary when you get to a certain depth. After that the game becomes much more challenging, though also a bit tedious. But hey, that's probably because I haven't found out the trick for that WM level yet.

The aforementioned poor English. Even if intentional, it irks me something rotten. The controls on the iOS version also didn't help, but then, perhaps I just don't like touch screen gaming. But even with that aside, what I did play just didn't interest me. It was just bland.

If there's a demo, I'd say play that. If not, look for videos of game play and check if it's something you'd like.

MichiGen: WTF Is... Waking Mars?
This might help you decide, I must say that it looks really interesting.
Although the graphics style reminds me of "And yet it moves" game.
His impressions are usually very informative. Actually And Yet it Moves reminds me of that new game The Bridge
looks awesome, kinda like a mix between and yet it moves and metroid. guess i can't do much wrong for 5 dollars *bought*
