Strike against the Darkfall!

Thunderscape, a classic 1990s dungeon crawler with real-time exploration of a vast and diverse underworld and challenging turn-based combat against many fearsome fiends of chaos, is available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

The world of Aden is in great peril. The demonic, corruptive power known as the Darkfall fills the world with monsters, abominations, and evil-inspiring artifacts. The realm is in dire need of defenders, and it's your job to lead them against the forces of chaos. You will explore a dark and dangerous underground to reach for the power you'll need to bring the light to where darkness reigns. A small party of stalwart adventurers seems to stand little chance against the hordes of evil. It's up to you to prove, that miracles do happen in fantasy worlds.

Thunderscape presents you with many time-proven RPG ideas that work together so well, that it's astounding that anyone would want to modify them. You get a party of six brave champions, a large gameworld to explore, lots of items to collect, stats to build, and enemies to slay. While roaming the world, the game progresses in real-time, switching to turn-based combat whenever you approach (or get ambushed by) an opponent. With everything that made dungeon crawlers so successful in the 1990 and some very distinctive steampunk-ish feel, this game is highly recommended to all cRPG fans looking for a challenge!

Set off to explore the world of Aden and save it from the corruptive forces of the Darkfall in Thunderscape, for only $5.99 on GOG.com.
There's guns in this too btw, so it's not standard fantasy. Also there's no classes that restrict character development, you just pick whatever skills you want (and there's a big choice too).

Combat is good too.

RaggieRags: GOG, any chance of getting that guide as an extra? Please?

Crosmando: The 3 books as scanned pdf's would be cool too.

zeffyr: Am I the only one that sees GOG's classic releases are only dungeons set RPGs? I'm not interested!

Crosmando: All RPG's except perhaps a few in the 80's and early 90's were dungeon crawlers.
There are plenty of interesting, non-RPG games that are waiting for GOG's release. For me every game like this above looks pretty much the same.
Coolio...will definitely be pickin' this one up
I don't want to get my hopes up, this could easily just be a fluke and we'll be seeing all indie, all the time from here on out.
Just got a reply from G-Doc

Sorry guys, looks like it wasn't meant to be

Crosmando: Can we please get a wallpaper version of that art image of Thunderscape on the front page in extras?

Roman5: This

The fornt page artwork is fucking awesome

GOG Team: Include it as a wallpaper in the xtras ASAP
I spoke with our design team, and I'm afraid it's not going to happen. :-(

Not for the lack of will, mind you. It's because whatever we used to make the top cover isn't enough to make a full set of HD wallpapers, apparently. Sorry!

DeadlyRamon: I still own the original manual and the excellent play guide written by Peter Olafson, whose sense of humor made it read less like a technical manual and more like a tongue-in-cheek fantasy novel.

We should be getting the strategy guide but it wasn't ready for the game's release.

So is this game an "Ultima Underworld clone" it looks like it judging from the information and screenshots.

Ultima Underworld is real-time single-character first-person. Thunderscape is turn-based party-based first-person.
So basically, not even close.

Well, you can buy equipment from NPC's, talk to NPC's, there are some outdoor areas and it's more open than UU, you control a party instead of a single character, there's more skills and character options than UU, the combat is much better and more tactical. About the only thing they have in common is that pixelated early 3D FPP graphics

I've bought it anyway, but it would be great to see the official strategy guide later on this place. Soundtracks and Official Strategy Guides/Hint books/Clue Books are my favourite extras here on GOG. :)
An SSI RPG? Cool.

Here's hoping Gold Box and EoB are next |X|
Good, another day my wallet is save.
It was nothing more than a mediocre game at the time of release.
Maybe if you find it interesting fighting endless hordes of monster so you can
check an (most times) empty room and than on the way back fighting the same
hordes again.

I can only hope that this is the beginning of other releases (better ones) from SSI.
A classic ive never heard of....

Mivas: I know. I'm just curious if their fascination with new games means they are all talk and no action given their "New = Bad; must immediately diss it vs. Old = Good" binary view.
I don't think that's a very common view. I think you might be misunderstanding (hopefully not intentionally) what people are saying and why many people have been frustrated with GOG lately. But whatever. There's no point in dragging that discussion into this thread.
