Spoiler: Sun wins, but you don't care.

Race the Sun, a thrilling, yet strangely relaxing, high speed chase through beautiful otherworldly abstract landscapes, is available 50% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.99 for the first week.

In Race the Sun, an abstract arcade racing title, you'll be doing exactly what the title suggests: flying towards the elusive horizon at extreme speeds. Maneuver your-lightning fast glider among obstacles as you pass them at impossible speeds, and take in all the beautiful sights and sounds this title has to offer. It's a meditative experience, that keeps you hooked by offering unlockable upgrades for your progress, and tracks your times against your friends' scores. The game comes with a built-in world editor, so you'll be able to create some amazing scenery yourself, and share them online. With sleek visuals and mesmerizing soundtrack, this title will have you both relaxed and excited, not to mention hooked to the screen from the first time you play it.

They say that the chase is much more important and gratifying than the goal itself. See that for yourself in Race the Sun, for only $4.99 on GOG.com. The 50% off launch discount offer lasts until Tuesday, November 12, at 10:59AM GMT.
Noone reminding it of Skyroads? Except for one post i seen on Facebook.
Only the graphics look a bit like Star Fox perhaps, but this game seems to be all about dodging.

CrowTRobo: ...but flat shaded polygons seems dated even for indies.
I could have its own charme. A change from typical hyper-realistic graphics. A teleporation into a fantasy polygon world. Well, I don't want to convince anybody but for some it just might work and look okay.

I fear that the game is quite simple and doesn't offer much diversion.

Now that you mention it, I can see the resemblance.
Hey all, Race The Sun developer here!

It's true, Star Fox was a big inspiration for us - we used to play it as kids when our parents let us *rent* Super Nintendos for our birthday.

The free web version isn't really representative of the full game anymore unfortunately - about 8 months of development followed that.

If you search 'race the sun' on Metacritic, there are quite a few other reviews out there as well if you're into that sort of thing :)

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer!

Great to see the the dev here! (and with a profilr for some ago, which means you were looking foward to GOG huh)
Its very appealing to me, since for ages I look for a speed race game without cars (I hate cars!)
I just played minutes ago the demo on Kongregate. Could you point the improvements from there?
Is there a soundtrack option to get with the game?
Thanks and well done job!

Sure: the improvements:
- The entire world has been recreated to be much more dynamic and interesting, rather than just random, mostly static objects in the demo. Check out the trailer for some examples of this.
- we added a unique relay-multiplayer system
- a world creator, with a hosted back-end so you can easily browse other mods
- 25 levels of player upgrades with new abilities, decals for your ship, and other features
- Apocalypse mode (think: Super Hexagon difficulty)
- Leaderboards with daily ranking
- Robust controller support with remappable controls, as well as video/quality settings.

Additionally - though it's not listed in the game description: Race The Sun is coming to Steam, and if you redeem your "flippfly key" provided with your GOG purchase, you will receive a free Steam key at launch.

Soundtrack: We will have 4 or 5 tracks in the final soundtrack. We included a sample here. The final soundtrack will probably be available for separate purchase on the Flippfly site soon.

Thanks!

Thanks for popping in here! I picked up the game from the Not On Steam Sale. Can you tell me how the GOG version differs, apart from the extras?

Also, I'm sure you've never heard of it, but there are some interesting parallels between this and the game Solglider. A solar-powered glider, collecting crystals, and running until the momentum gives out. As I say, pure coincidence, as very few folks know about this other game. But nothing new under the Sun, eh? ;)

Kind of you answering all of that (and fast!). I must confess that I watched the trailer once without paying attention to the moving and diverse enviroment. Well, sure is far from the "demo", totally enchanced.
I had no idea about this multiplayer system. Is there ways to compete with other players? Is there a dedicated server? How to acess that? Is possible through there obtain new maps and mods? How to install that?
We are here for DRM free :) Though surely the keys can help you with sales.
I love soundtracks (sometimes more than the games heh) and is good to know that.
Sorry about the endless questions and you already sold the game to me!

First - thanks for supporting us through the NotOnSteam sale!
The version here is actually identical to the version you bought there, except we *just* released an update this week! You can grab that on your flippfly dot com "my account" page.

I had never actually heard of solglider! We've been hearing about a variety of games that have similarities to RtS. Apparently the idea wasn't as original as we once thought, haha!

The multiplayer works through our online backend, which is one feature where you must be logged in using the account created with the key we provide with your purchase. You "share" your game and then pass a link to a friend (or just post it on Twitter or wherever) and anyone with the link can take on the next leg of the relay. This feature is admittedly a little rough around the edges; we'd like to improve it in the Steam version by letting you send in-game invites directly to your friends or within the Steam game invite system.

Thanks for the information, I was able to set up an account just now from my Humble key and am downloading the update. Cheers!

mistermumbles: That's not a bad thing at all in my book. I love the original Starfox. ;)
It was a great game in its day. I loved it too. But these days I generally want more polygons. There's just no need for things to look this basic now. Simplistic, fine. But this is low poly in a way that implies technological constraints that no longer exist.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I would not be surprised if it is a very good game. But we have to be honest, first impressions mean a lot. I'm sure the extreme minimalistic nature of the graphics have had a negative affect on sales. Having the graphical style compared to a 20 year old game isn't exactly a marketing plus. Yes, retro 2D graphics are very popular for indie games, but 2D ages so much better.

Frozen screenshots don't do justice to the art design. The game takes place near sunset at high speeds. The number of polygons per object hardly registers when they're zooming past casting shadows everywhere. If anything, the simple shapes help emphasize the real attraction, the lighting, shadows, and atmosphere. Realistic textures and objects would spoil the effect.
Finally. I've been waiting for this one.
