The Secret Life of (not)Arabia.

Magic Carpet 2: The Netherworld, a sequel to the magical flying action game, with a brand new dynamic gameworld to explore, new challenging enemies, new mighty spells, and improved graphics engine, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99

The secret art of weaving magical carpets capable of flight is now lost to mankind, but in the ancient times, when the mystical powers were still abundant in the world, every self-respecting magician simply had to have one. So, when the evil demon lord Vissuluth rose to power in the mysterious realm of Netherworld it was clear that the forces of good will meet him in battle in the skies. Once-prosperous land, now infested with monsters and terrorized by evil wizards needed a champion. The benevolent magician Kafkar saw that champion in his visions, riding a magic carpet into the heart of chaos and strife, gathering mana and firing mighty spells at his opponents, reshaping the foundations of the realm. That champion is, of course, you.

Magic Carpet 2: The Netherworld is a fast-paced, open world flying action game in which you soar through the strange skies of a fantastic land on a flying carpet. You wipe out your enemies with a wide range of offensive spells and gather the mana orbs that they leave behind, to accumulate even greater power. Just as most Bullfrog titles, this one too is a bit of a god game: you can either help or harass the nomads inhabiting the plains of Netherworld, and with spells like volcano, earthquake, and gravity well, you can even shape the terrain around you. With incredible giant monsters, unforgettable landscapes and unique mechanics, this game truly is a magical journey you'll never forget!

Feel free as you chase the clouds on the woven miracle that is Magic Carpet 2: The Netherworld, for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

tinyE: I'm still waiting for Magic Carpet 3: The Netherlands about two American tourist who go to an Amsterdam hash bar and go on the ride of their lives without actually leaving their seats.
Good one. LOL

Nice release GOG!

keeveek: AT LAST! More releases like this, please! And less shitty platformers from 3D Realms :P
Now now, I think they have a place here. It's just that GOG has been releasing so many lately...

Bloodygoodgames: Me neither.

A bit too 'pixelly' for me (sorry guys, but graphics DO matter to me. I just can't play games with such low-grade graphics. Grates on every nerve I have :).

But....still a good release for those of you who like this type of game.

timppu: Just FYI, the game actually looks better than in those screenshots GOG provided, or at least should. The screenshots seem to be the game running in lores (320x240 resolution I think) graphics, but they can be swtiched to 640x480 quite easily.
Yup, we can confirm that game can be easily switched to the high-res SVGA mode. Here's a listing o MC2 key controls:

Move carpet forward/back: up/down arrows
Slide carpet left/right: left/right arrows
Turn carpet left/right/up/down: mouse
Cast spell: Left or right mouse button
Select left assigned spell: Press 1-0
Select right assigned spell: Press Ctrl + 1-0
Open spells screen: Enter or left+right together
Toggle resolution VGA/SVGA: R
Destroy your own castle: Shift-L (if you're up against a cliff and
can't expand, for instance)
Quit to main menu, abort current level: Esc
Quit to DOS- Shift-Q
Restart current level: Shift-R
Pause game: P (P again to unpause)
F1: Sound fx on/off
F2: Music on/off
F3: Time acceleration
F4: Image softening on/off
F5: Reflections on/off
F6: Sky on/off
F7: Shadows on/off
F8: Icons and map on/off
F9: Speed blur on/off
F10: Toggle between 3D, stereogram, and normal mode
(If anyone can actually play in stereogram mode, please let me
know.)

We couldn't include high-res screenshots at this time, due to some legal procedures we're obliged to follow. We'll try to replace them in the future.

And as long as we're discussing graphics here, It just hit me: our today's releases--Secret Agent and Magic Carpet 2--were published only 3 years apart. I do remember that the evolution of graphics in PC games was ridiculously rapid in the 90s, but seriously, from the remnants of EGA games in 1992 to 3D SVGA in 1995? Madness!

Kunovski: I've spent my youth (and destroyed my only joystick) with this game... oh, the underground levels with those stupid spiders...

I need a new joystick now!

EDIT: and those massive one on one battles...
and the feeling when you destroyed an enemy castle...
and those flights through a thick fog to the unknown shores...
and...
I received an Logitech Attack 3 as a gift a few months back. No complaints so far.

Haven't tried it with Magic Carpet yet. Gonna have to see how it works.

I think Magic Carpet games play the best with keyboard + mouse, even if it doesn't necessarily need that much precision (most weapons are partly autoaiming, IIRC).

Magic Carpet graphics were really something special upon release, I think it was the best looking game of the time, even surpassing Descent (I think Descent and Magic Carpet appeared the same year (1994), at least according to MobyGames... what a great year for gaming that much have been)..

So it was just all that more surprising that also its gameplay was really great, and _original_.

Nice release, never expected to see this one.
Even screenshot also bind to legal procedure? Must be a tough world out there. Not as straight as i used to think.
Yeah, 60 frames a second, 640x480 resolution, fully destructible 3D environment in real-time with awesome spell effects. You just have to understand what it was like in 1995 to load this up on DOS, compared to everything else.

I will never understand their release schedule. For example, they just released Settlers 3 - many years after releasing settlers 2 here. They released Cultures 1+2 , and not 3+4 yet.

At the same time, they are releasing like one 2D Apogee platformer a week. I don't know why, it's not like people are buying them like crazy or anything...

And i'm still waiting for SimCity 3000...

they need to release the games sooner or later, and I'm glad it's sooner as I don't want most of these games and I'm broke, so = victory!
Hopefully we get Syndicate Wars on Thursday too :) Or maybe Powermonger.

Also, I just realized that through Ubisoft GOG has the right to sell:
http://www.mobygames.com/game/world-of-aden-thunderscape

An awesome turn-based, party-based 3D RPG from 95, works fine on DOS, isn't a D&D game. Get onto it GOG!

Sorry that you think that way, but I really waiting for this, and 50% off sale (or more).
I'm getting this today and trying out the keyboard mouse combo (I never knew the mouse look was supported back then...)
Those look like 320x200 screenshots. Is the game not playable at 640x480 on DOSBox?
That is an awesome release. All I need now is for Syndicate Wars to be released amd I'll be one happy camper.
