Weclock: how does this violate our rights? seriously...
on games you buy from the ea store you have to pay an extra $6 to be able to redownload the game for the next two years, there's no life time agreement.
And GOG certainly didn't lie, it acted on good faith, and it turns out they weren't able to deliver those promises, so what? there's still a HUGE selection of other games that you can download indefinitely. GOG did the responsible thing and notified you about it before it was too late.

GOG Staff told us on the forums the games would still be available to the people who bought them. I really doubt the request to remove the game for people who have already paid came out of nowhere. It was probably mentioned before and they were working on something that fell through, either way I was told something that wasent the truth.
And EA's store is shit, there are a lot of shit stores and thats why they arent popular. Steam didnt get to be #1 pulling bullshit all the time, sure it has problems like everything else but you will never see the EA store get that big because of its horrendous DRM and rules

Starhawk64: So what I learned from all this is:
a) Codemasters are douchebags
b) Back up every game! Hey, there's no DRM, so we're allow to do that!
c) GOG is still a great service, and this fiasco is not their fault.
Thanks for the warning! Although I'm disappointed that I will not be able to re-download Colin McRae Rally 2005 and have it pulled off my virtual shelf, I'm not going to slit my wrists over it. I bought the thing for $5, no big loss.
Though it begs the question: Will GOG versions of TOCA 3 and Colin 2005 show up on torrent sites? The only problem I see with DRM-free digital distribution is that it'll be easy to pirate the games.

2. I always download them to my computer and put them on DVD's when I can. It should be good user policy.
I got these games because I was interested in them and don't regret any of my purchases at all. I do believe it is a stupid move to have these two game removed as they are both quality games and there is no guaranty that their will be quality sequels for them. I know that Dirt 2 will be coming out but will it be as good as 05? As mentioned above, It stupid to allow them to be moved as this almost is like saying it's okay to pirate these games and if anything, this will happen like a flood gate opening.
Because of this news, I have been searching for an online storage solution, in addition to my locally backed up game installers.
I came across Online Storage Solution
Their service appeals to me because of these features:
"Online Storage Solution Places No Limits On...
* Amount Of Space That You Use
* File Size Can Be As Large As The File System Allows"
"Limitless Online Storage $19.00 Per Year"
I'm bummed. I haven't downloaded TOCA yet. I do have CMR. I'm pretty pissed that this is how Codemasters treats customers who buy their games.
Bah, I don't feel like I deserve a refund or anything.. damn, it was like $2.99.. anyhoot, it probably is time for another free GOG game.. been a while eh.. :)

wraith808: Perhaps you should read the post about this not being about the games but the principle?

The principle I'm seeing here is that everyone is up in arms toward GOG as if they took a piss in your milkshakes and already took the games down and don't care about it's userbase at all when they're reluctant to taking them down at all and are trying to come up with a legal solution to all of this. But none of that matters because most people here are all "HOW DARE YOU TAKE BACK YOUR WORD AND BETRAY OUR TRUST ARGHHHH" and seem to not care.
This service is amazing. So amazing in fact, that it really shouldn't exist. But yet it's here, and everyone pulling the strings behind this amazing service here has done a lot to bring us these great games completely up to date for next to nothing AND with great, free extras, but as soon as a uncontrollable problem comes up that really has nothing to do with GOG and more to do with expiring car licenses from car manufacturers in TWO games here, people might as well be outside HQ with burning torches and pitchforks. And that's what's hilarious.
GOG didn't mention this problem before because, as they already stated, they didn't think it was going to come to this (and have already said that if it DOES come to this again, they will mention it), but since Codemasters is forced to do it, and as a result, GOG is forced to do it, then it has to be done. It's not even official yet, as GOG is fighting like crazy to keep the files on their servers, but people don't seem to appreciate it and don't stop to realize that...NEWS FLASH...unexpected things happen and contracts expire.
If you're really that concerned about a sudden lapse in a contract coming up again and a game having to be removed, then nothing is safe. Nothing lasts forever. That's the way the world works. I, for one, appreciate everything GOG is doing and don't feel misled (lol) at all.
If you want to go further into it, it's even stated in their Terms of Service:
"Termination These Terms of Use are effective until terminated. You agree that GOG may terminate your log in access to the Service, including your user name and password, at any time for any reason without prior notice or liability. GOG may change, suspend, or discontinue all or any aspect of the Service at any time, including the availability of any feature, without prior notice or liability."

Fixed, but I still love you Wishbone xxoo :D
This thread is turning into a train wreck .... and .... I .... can't .... look .... away
Welp, since we're now singling out Wishbone as the bad guy, I want it on record that I for one am completely on his side and believe that he is the strongest voice of reason in the entire thread. So chew on that. And yes, I'm the same me who made the incredibly sympathetic post on the first page (which I still stand by every word of).
I don't know where anybody got the idea that he's attacking GoG or saying they broke the terms of service, so it would be great if we could have slightly less screen real estate dedicated to defending GoG against his attacks and explaining why GoG are well within the terms of service.

When you joined the site, you tacitly agreed to the Terms of Service? Didn't read em? Not GoG's fault. And as Eternal Sonata pointed out directly from those Terms of Service :
"Termination These Terms of Use are effective until terminated. You agree that GOG may terminate your log in access to the Service, including your user name and password, at any time for any reason without prior notice or liability. GOG may change, suspend, or discontinue all or any aspect of the Service at any time, including the availability of any feature, without prior notice or liability."

Wow, way to generalise from my post :/
I wasn't attacking Wishbone, I was merly jesting at the person that I quoted on his generalisation. Albeit, perhaps too subtle.
O god so I was defending someone who wasn't making attacks from people who weren't attacking him for making attacks against peoplaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Way to miss the point. No need in debating if one side isn't going to even read the basis of the discussion.
No one is up in arms as I see it. They're just asking calm, pointed, rational questions to be sure of what happened. Nothing wrong with that, and no one as I said in the post that you apparently didn't read, is raking GOG over the coals over it.

Gator_man: This thread is turning into a train wreck .... and .... I .... can't .... look .... away

Yeah... Look guys, I made this thread pretty much so that people who didn't get the email were made aware of the problem and just to say it's a little disappointing.
This thread isn't really here just so you can yell at GOG telling them how much they ruined your life -- this isn't entirely their fault. For that matter, it's not here for you to yell at the people yelling at GOG. They have a right to be upset even if you don't agree with them.
I also think they made the right choice in holding off on this news as long as possible in the hopes that CodeMasters would stop being so... well, lame. But then again, from a company that actually puts cheats in their games and then makes you PAY them extra to use those cheats, I guess I can't really expect anything better of CodeMasters.
And I certainly wouldn't expect GOG to then offer up refunds or free games -- after all, we still have the games we purchased as long as we keep a local backup.
I feel sorry for those with net limitations though, given how hard it may be for them to download the games in times and I would hope that for them at least, GOG would find a way of either splitting up the download more (in split rar files, or the like) or by getting media to them. As that's only fair.
