My buddies and I recently got interested in Quake 3 again, and we've been having frequent LAN sessions fragging one another ( <3 Longest Yard). I've been slowly getting the hang of strafe jumping again, but rocket jumping on jump pads still takes some getting used to. In an era where games are typically (painfully) slow, playing Quake 3 with /cg_fov 130 is really a breath of fresh air.

It was thus that I went back to Quake Live again and realised how "off" it felt compared to Quake 3. Not sure how to put it though - it's not that one is more intuitive than the other, but the feel is different. Zoom distance is also severely cut, making it better off as an improved aiming aid (easier to look around with) than a shooting aid (easier to make sure your shot hits).

So, is anyone out there still playing Q3, or even Live? Do any of you happen to be professional players?

I really enjoy Quake 3, but it's very hard to find any vanilla servers. I only really like Free-For-All as well, not too keen on the team based modes.
I play it from time to time, but I am not a pro player by any means.
Quake live is the same game
I play lots.
But less and less over the last few months.
Too many bots playing Q3 now.

And, Adijager, no, they are NOT the same thing.
They look the same, and have the same stuff, but they are definitely not the same.
Like to OP said, the 'feel' is off, the 'lag' is totally different, and it may as well just be a whole different game.
Sure, you can get used to the live version.
But it isnt the same.
Weapons balance was tweaked in Quake Live as well. The rail is noticeably nerfed for example. I do like some of the menu/interface options now in QL but as far as gameplay and feel, I still prefer vanilla Q3 unmodded.
GOG needs to score Zenimax and celebrate by erecting a permanent GOG Q3 vanilla FFA server.

Also, for those that might go back and give vanilla Q3 a try, you'll most likely need to disable hardware based gamma to achieve proper color/brightness with the console command

Oh yes. I was just playing TLY, and the damage for rail was appalling. I scored more kills from knocking the AI off the map than I did fragging him. I believe in Q3, 1 shot on someone with less than 80hp (give and take some) is a 1-hit KO
Quake 3 had health bars.....

Those were the days.
Not to be rude but Q3 SUCKED.......no single player after two games of perfectly balanced single/multiplayer game play.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand how you intended it. Would Q3 SUCKED be more rude w/out the disclaimer? Your mother's a whore... bless her heart. If you want to make a constructive argument, then fine but flagrant remarks like that stink of trolls. Adding "not to be rude" makes an asshole statement sound like a pretentious asshole statement.

No, not to be rude means I don't mean to offend anyone.

And just because I said it sucked doesn't make my opinion any more or less valid.
Not to get off topic, but I really used to love Quake 1's death match game... especially with the grappling Hook mode.

Anyone else miss the grappling hook?

Oddly enough, I can only find my "Team Arena" disc, and not the original "Quake III Arena" disc.
Just wanted to put it out there that I could beat anyone on this board at Quake 3 any day.

Quake Live name is Vagabond.
