I wouldn't mind a new game set in the same universe. It should be plot driven though.

klaymen: Would WotC even allow it?
Planescape is discontinued setting, isn't it?
WotC has been on a setting binge lately. It's only a matter of time.
They would probably make it into an ass-backward 3d shooter which will be delivered broken and be in some sort of weird limbo when they quite support.

yep pretty much :/

Setting is fantastic IMO i don't know why they discontinued it... Are they dumb ? :>
I'd like to see another CRPG using the Planescape setting, too (not necessarily a PS:T sequel though). Sadly, I don't think it's very likely that we'll get one, for the reasons Perkel listed.

But the strong points of the Planescape setting and of PS:T were that they were based on fresh and surprising ideas instead of answering expectations and presenting the same old same old again, and that they were created with a passion and the readiness to take a risk instead of just trying to milk a cash cow. Obsidian Entertainment could always come up with something fresh, passionate and out the box again, and chances are that it will be even better when it's not PS:T2 but something original (even if - or because - it's way more risky).

With Chris Avalone who writed PS:T Story Obsidian can't go wrong if they are allowed to do their own game.

And that is where the problem lie...

Obsidian :

Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (2004)
Neverwinter Nights 2 (2006)
Alpha Protocol: The Espionage RPG (2010)
Fallout: New Vegas (2010)
Dungeon Siege III (2011)

Only Alpha Protocol was their original IP (i don't count F:NW as they aren't in full black isle squad) and Alpha was freaking amazing game considering scope and how innovative that game was.

Chris Avalone is god IMO.

You should all watch mat caht youtube interview with Chris, Amazing guy:

Of course Im a bit sceptical about these news since "retro revivals" not always work but sometimes they really do work well

if it's done right - we could get an amazing game

lukipela: I am impressed. You are the only person ive ever known that liked Alpha Protocol.

I understand what you mean though. Its like Valve, havent released a new IP in years.
"You are the only person ive ever known that liked Alpha Protocol. "

I asure you that i'm not alone.

Alpha problem was that game is considered as TPP action game but in the end it's a RPG.

RPG fgames aren't about statistics or swords etc.

RPG is roleplaying game, ROLE PLAYING. So Diablo 2 isn't RPG it's hack and slash. Most JRPG aren't RPG at All.

Also Mass efect was RPG but ME2 just stepped down from RPG because in the end there was no choices only i'l be good now i'll be bad now with same choice.

Alpha is RPG at it's core same as Deus Ex. And same as Deus Ex who have shitty gameplay and exelent choices/story.

YMMV on that one.
Personally, I felt that KotOR 2's story was rather a mess due to time constraints and overreliance on a single NPC, NWN 2 's story had lots of boring filler content and was overly reliant on a ridiculous NPC who might as well have been named "Plot Device", and Alpha Protocol's story was horribly clichéd (though I liked the game overall as well).
Dungeon Siege 3 is primarily a hack & slash though, so I doubt it'll have that great of a story; it's just not the point of that kind of game.

New Vegas was great, story and all, though. It helps that the story was largely recycled from Van Buren, when they apparently had better writers than they do now.

Having said that I would like someone using the Planescape setting again, but I doubt it'll happen, and even if it did I'm not sure even Obsidian could do it justice as they are now. Remember that they'd have to use D&D 4th ed. rules, too.

mystral: Planescape: Torment 2 is like Baldur's Gate 3 imho; unnecessary and unwanted additions to great RPGs that already had a good end to their story.

What story would you tell in in an hypothetic PS: T 2 anyway?
The Nameless One is done with his torment and having a new PC would feel wrong.
This. It's like continuing making more Terminator movies after the perfect ending in Terminator 2. Oh wait... XD
I consider Alpha Protocol to be the best game of 2010, wonderful game despite the technical flaws.

You must consider that Avalone not always is writer for their stuff.

He wrote Planescape, he did new reno and vault city dialog and stories in F2, He did most of dialogs and story in New Vegas. led the design of the cancelled Fallout title Van Buren. And he is creative director and main man behind Dead money DLC for New vegas.

He has great talent fr his work.

But he isn't always involved in stories or dialogs. Sometimes only one of them.

Planescape is 1st place in storytelling and narrative of all games. Till this day i can't comprehend how some man can create that awasome story.

Great stories rarely consist of big WTF moments (in a good way) and they hount you for few days after finishing game. Like The boss story in MGS3.

Planescape is one big WTF moment one after another and ravel, immortality, valor, dakon story etc . ending, crypt of immortal, Nordom ignus story, changing your body, tatoo meanings, whole world of planescape torment at the begging felt like you found a diamond in big pile of shit that was gaming back then and even more today. The more hours are passing the more you are amazed. And in end game moments story is WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF to the end. -

Sad part is probably we will never see again game that is this good in story department.

Josh Sawyer and Chris Avellone were the lead writers for Van Buren and also Fallout: New Vegas. Download the Fallout Bible extra that comes with any Fallout game on GOG. Yep Josh Sawyer.

ilves: No offense, but recent rounds of sequels/revamps of older game franchises haven't been very good for the most part. The upcoming X-com isn't even the same genre anymore. I personally didn't think Fallout 3 was that great, although others disagree. I'm just not sure anyone is going to do such a dialogue heavy RPG style game anymore. It'd come out much different.

I wouldn't mind another planescape set game though as an RPG, I just don't think it would work out tying it directly to the older game.

Perkel: agree,

as of fallout 3 same thing here it isn't fallout for me.

BUT You should try F: New Vegas it is a real Fallout 3 as it should be created by almost same people as F1/2 ant it shows ! :)
Fallout: New Vegas is a best thing that could happen to the franchise. It's really a worthy successor to F1 and 2.
As far as i'm concerned Fallout 3 never existed
"Planescape: Game2" - Fuck yes, fantastic world with shitloads of story potential and the story could even cross with the original in places if done very carefully

"Planescape: Torment 2: Torment Harder" - I KILL YOU!!! *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB* *STAB*
