Surprise, surprise! We have one more EA classic that was tucked away, but we decided not to wait with it till the next wave of EA greatness comes by. That's how cool we are ;)

We believe we could end this newspost at the title, as we're pretty sure everyone is familiar with the SimCity franchise. But if you lived the past 20+ years under a rock and somehow you don't know what the fuss is all about let us explain:

SimCity 2000 Special Edition is the second installment, and way superior than its predecessor, of the most popular city building sim series by Maxis. You play the role of the mayor of a new municipality, starting in 1900. Your task is to expand your small village into a bustling metropolis, and manage it so the citizens are happy and willing to live in it. You're responsible for building housing districts and commercial facilities as well as power plants, streets, bus depots, and more. You need to set and raise taxes and allocate the money cleverly so the city grows.

SimCity 2000 introduced many enhancements to the series. First the view has been changed from a top-down to isometric which allows you to fully customize the terrain before you start the new city. Plenty of new types of facilities now include schools, hospitals, zoos, museums, colleges, and even prisons. Thanks to underground layer you can now build subway and utilities like water pipes under the city. Also your city is not the only one on the map, and you have to build links with other municipalities to increase trade and population. Last but not least, prepare yourself and your city for earthquakes, floods, fire, and other disasters like monster invasion, as they do like to happen--and usually at the worst possible time.

If you want to take a break from expanding your city, you can play one of many pre-made scenarios that are included in the special edition of the game. Some of those scenarios are based on real life events, like the 1989 Hurricane Hugo hitting Charleston in South Carolina or the 1991 Oakland firestorm, and some are just made up by the developer as Hollywood being attacked by a giant robot or nuclear power station major meltdown in center of Manhattan!

But that's not all: SimCity 2000 Special Edition on GOG.com also includes the SimCity Urban Renewal Kit which lets you modify the images used in-game to represent various buildings. Now you can create your own basic bitmap representing your childhood house, your school, or your favorite monument. All that and much more is available now for only $5.99.

1ThorsHammer: Want...Sim...Tower!
I don't recall being all that impressed with Sim Tower, compared to SimCity 2000. Always wanted to try Sim Ant though. And SimCity 2000 Gold (Multiplayer) - did anyone have that? Was the multiplayer fun?

1ThorsHammer: Want...Sim...Tower!
I absolutely loved SimTower, and have been longing for someone to remake a more modern version of it. I know there are some iOS apps that are similar, but eh. Making me want to dig through my old box of CDs and find it again!

spindown: Wait, so this is actually a complete release containing all the expansions?!

SLP2000: It looks like it is. I wonder if this means we'll soon see the expansions for previously released EA games.
My guess is that SimCity 2000 is probably an exception regarding the expansions since the Special Edition was available for licensing. It's a very welcome surprise, though.

What about the "sequel" Yoot Tower?
This was an insta-buy for me.
I remember playing Sim City 2000 when I was younger.

If SimCity 3000 comes out on Gog, I'll buy that too. I've never played Sim City 4 though.

SimTower is indeed a cool game, also good memories. Better name would be SimLifts ;-)

ne_zavarj: We should thank this to our goverment don't you think ? We should hang all politicians .
avatar
DrIstvaan: Well, I'm certainly none too happy about them (not that I ever was), but hanging them is maybe a tad too much... No, I'd exile our politicians forever at least from Hungary, but maybe even from Europe. Or outright have them deported to some far-away, uninhabited island.
I despise democracy on the whole. I would rather go with constitutional monarchy instead. Works pretty nice over at the Brits and the Japanese...
I'm a big Sim-series junkie, I've played nearly all of them, and I still have the discs for SimTower, SimCopter, SimAnt, and so on. I've been without SimCity 2000 for some time, my SimCity has some weird marks inside of it that's rendered it unreadable, and one of my SimCopters became cracked in the middle.

Being able to make your city in SimCity 2000 and fly around it in SimCopter was simply a thing of beauty. Streets of SimCity was alright, but I liked SimCopter more. SimAnt is endlessly entertaining. I have a friend who rented the SNES version from Blockbuster and never returned it. A little late for that now. :P

I ordered SimEarth from a Scholastic book order promotion from an order form when my little sister was in elementary school. It has it's own special jewel case, and honestly, I haven't played the game in years. Maybe I was too young, but every time I played, I absolutely hated it.

SimTower is definitely one of the better titles in the series, I'd place it just under SimCity in importance, and Yoot Tower was a worthy successor.

One Sim game that doesn't get nearly enough praise is SimTunes. That game made me a bit of a fan of Toshio Iwai. It prompted me download a rom of Otocky, as well as buy a Japanese copy of Electroplankton around the time the DS was new. I still long to play the unreleased Sound Fantasy, but I'm guessing if a rom of it exists out there somewhere, it's not any closer to being leaked than it was a decade ago. Mario Paint was great, but the SNES mouse would've been a real hot item with a game like Sound Fantasy.

I already own SimTunes, but dammit, I might just buy it again if it shows up on GOG. I'd implore anybody else to do the same. That and Microsoft's 3D Movie Maker gave me hours of creative fun.

Simcity 4 is awesome, incredibly awesome with BATs (fan custom made content):
I mean check this out for instance:

At least 80% of the buildings in there are custom made.

MickTheMage: Nice. Now we only need Sim Copter :)
I seconded that. Never found another game like Sim Copter
Nice release. I never really got into the SIM games, don't know why. I did like Theme Park and Theme Hospital though.
I'd love to play SimTower again (or YootTower, at all) and Sim Ant as well. Not all the Sim games were gold, though. I have Sim Life right next to me right now, at the bottom of my CD... stack. And there it will stay, I assure you.

EDIT: And Sim Earth was great. So many different versions of Sim Earth, I'm sure to miss something that was included in the Mac version but not in the DOS, but I will definitely buy it anyway.

Well done, GOG. Insta-buy.

The original Sim City was the first game I ever owned. It was a present the year the family got one of those godawful Leading Edge computers, I think you only had a 20% chance of having one that would survive the year without needing to be serviced.

It's kind of odd that literally just yesterday I was looking at my Sim CIty 2k disks and wondering where the other one was. Definitely an instant buy.
