Survey Results: See what the future of GOG.com holds!

A few weeks ago we asked you to fill out a survey about some of the possible new areas of gaming that GOG.com might move into in the future. We also promised that we’d share the results with you, and they are below. Before we get to that, though, we did want to let you know what these mean to us:

1. We remain committed to bringing you guys the best games from all of gaming history, on both PC and Mac. This means that while we’re exploring ways to bring you new games, we also are committed to bringing classics back to life as well. This year alone has seen Omikron, System Shock 2, the Leisure Suit Larry series, Strike Commander, and even Daikatana!

2. DLC is a controversial issue, but something that has been in gaming—by another name—since the very early days. You guys seem to understand that it’s not possible for us to sign new games with all of their DLC (before it is even made) bundled in, and it looks like you’re willing to either buy DLC or not as you find it interesting. As part of our continual efforts to improve the user experience on GOG.com, we will be looking at new, better ways to present DLC in our catalog as well.

3. Selling episodic content before the “season” is finished is also something we’re looking forward to bringing you in the future, and you seem to agree.

4. Season passes—for both DLC and for episodic content—clearly have a mixed perception here. Season passes—if we do offer them—are something that we’ll approach with deliberation to make sure that we’re confident that the content that is promised will all be delivered.

5. Finally, we have somewhat conflicting information on the persistent multiplayer features; when discussed in a very abstract fashion (as it was in the first survey), it’s a very clear “no.” When mentioned in a specific game that we’ve shown you, it’s an equally clear “yes.” What we’re going to be sure of, going forward, is that we’re very careful that any game that we bring you guys with persistent multiplayer features will be at least as offline-friendly as Planetary Annihilation is.

One of the defining characteristics of GOG.com is that the games that we sell have no DRM; this isn't going to change, and we will continue to evaluate the games that we bring to you to make sure that they're not only great games, but great games that we think will fit in well with how we do business.

Thank you for responding to our surveys in such large numbers. GOG.com would be a mere shadow of itself if it wasn't for its incredible, open, friendly, and active community--that is you!

sqlrob: Then why Daikatana? /me runs

Seriously though, thanks for posting the results.
Personally, I think Daikatana belongs here because it's a very important part of gaming history, being John Romero's bitch and what not. But I'm kinder to bad old games than bad new games in general.

Now that's just plain discrimination ! :( Bouh !

I don't like the buy in for "more" money to get early access to alpha or beta. On Desura you can buy in early for "less" money to get alpha or beta access.

I don't understand this new trend of paying more to help test a product. I received one particular alpha for 75% off the regular price. The game is in the early stages, and it is lacking features and has bugs. I'm enjoying playing with it though. While I did pay a lot less to get it in the alpha stage, I feel like I am still paying it back buy giving feedback on game play, bugs, and features.

I don't want to pay more than full price to play an unfinished game that will just take away the better experience of playing a complete game.

Eh...
It seems justice prevailed!
The results of the survey seem to be in line with my initial predictions and personal views on the issues at large.
Thank you for being so open about all of this, GOG.

100% agreed and said so in the thread of the survey.
Treating the active involvement in making the final release a better game for everyone as a higher priced privilege is beyond my comprehension.

Oh God, people WANT broken Alpha/Beta versions which will keep them from fully enjoying the full game once it's released but they DON'T WANT multiplayer games. Horrible world we live in.

Agree.

I develop software - if we were to tell our customers that we were going to give them their product early they would jump at the chance. However tell them: "well actually it'll be full of bugs, not have all the features yuo want and will cost you more" - I know exactly where they would tell me to shove that idea.

P.S. This reminds me of something:

"The Encyclopaedia Galactica defines a robot as a mechanical apparatus designed to do the work of a man. The marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation defines a robot as "Your Plastic Pal Who's Fun To Be With."

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy defines the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as "a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes," with a footnote to the effect that the editors would welcome applications from anyone interested in taking over the post of robotics correspondent.

Curiously enough, an edition of the Encyclopaedia Galactica that had the good fortune to fall through a time warp from a thousand years in the future defined the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as "a bunch of mindless jerks who were the first against the wall when the revolution came."

I don't get the alpha/beta either, at least for most games. I wouldn't want to play Project Eternity alpha, for example. That's a game that I want a perfect experience the first time, like the first time I played Baldur's Gate.

The game I am playing an alpha of is different. First I saved $30 off the release price. Also, it's a sandbox game. I am running a dedicated server, and I wanted in at the alpha level so I can learn about each part of it as it is added. I plan to build my own world with it's own rules when it is complete. It's similar to MineCraft, so I don't feel an alpha will ruin the experience.

Like I said though, the games I want to alpha/beta are very rare, and I definitely don't want to pay more for that.

Really. I'm as anti-social as the next guy but I don't hate multiplayer games per se.

Yeah this isn't very surprising to me either though still reassuring. The Omerta DLC brought out the vocal minority and this survey brought out the more level-headed folk, many of whom were probably unaware of the raging going on in the forums in the first place.
No big surprise here, really. It seems consistent with the forum discussions.

Yeah, well, there are a few exceptions. I also played an MMO in its early stage two years ago but with these games it's a different story. I mean, the devs open them to the public once they feel the game is good enough to be played (and often even paid for) and the development process won't change very much until the game is "dead", usually years after the game is "finished". And the moment when the devs are ready to give the game version number 1.0 is more of a symbolic gesture than anything else - after all, it's not "finished" if the devs continue to expand and improve it for years, eh?

However, with singleplayer games playing the Alpha/Beta will IMO usually ruin the experience. After all, you get to play a broken version of what you SHOULD only play once its finished. And once the game is finished you get to play an improved version of what you've already played. Great... with multiplayer it's totally different. These games are based off the idea that the same content can be played zillions of times and is kept fresh by the player interaction - so when exactly it hits 1.0 doesn't matter much. But hey, multiplayer games is what GOGers don't want, despite wanting early versions. Perfect combo! >.<

This went straight to my g+ stream. Customer survey follow-ups: That's how it's done :-)

Even if the last two results seem to "collide". I think it just means that we're not interested in being forced into dependency or subordination. Optional online features which require an account: Yes. But general enforcement of registration and/or authentication to start a game: No.

Regarding alpha/beta: Well, just wait until the game is finished and profit from a larger testing-crowd? Apart from that I remember buying Minecraft at alpha- or betastage for less money. I liked that and enjoyed being served new content for free from time to time as the game evolved.

Same reaction here. Also, seeing that more people voted Yes than No for Season Passes really makes my heart sink.
