Celebrate our fifth birthday and shoot for the stars--for free!

Our fifth birthday celebrations continue with the addition of a new free game to the catalog: Stargunner, a frenetic Sci-Fi side-scrolling classic shooter, is now on GOG.com!

In a distant galaxy of Andromeda an epic struggle between two planets is drawing to a close. The greedy, powerful Zilions are gathering an almighty fleet to destroy, once and for all, a neighboring civilization of Ytimians. When their army takes flight, there is nothing that can stop them from annihilating Ytima. Unless you--one of the elite squad of Stargunners--can cripple their immense forces while they are still stationed at strongholds scattered on the surface of Zile. The challenge, even for a special forces pilot like you, is daunting. So get your laser cannons charged and lead your swift spacecraft to victory!

Stargunner is an exceptionally well-crafted Sci-Fi shooter with fast-paced action and explosive boss fights. You will have to battle over 75 unique, fully-rendered and animated enemy ships in diverse environments: in space, on the planet's Zile mountainous surface, even underwater, with plenty of weapons, shields, and power-ups available to boost your craft. With fitting soundtrack and--for the time of its original release--ground-breaking pre-rendered 3D graphics, which made the game one of the most beautiful and detailed shooters of the 90s, Stargunner is a sure-fire pick for classic shoot 'em up fans!

Blast through the almighty Zilion fleet in this frantic space extravaganza, get your free copy of Stargunner on GOG.com!
Why is everyone so awed by this? Its been freely available for over eight years now. Its about as generous as giving away copies of Daggerfall.

EDIT: Dont get me wrong, its nice to have this on a easy-to-use package now, but it isn't that awesome.

Congratulation for the Birthday GOG! may you provide us old people more Good Ol Games.
Thanks GOG hopefully many more birthdays to come. Even if this was available free elsewhere, I don't remember ever hearing of it, so happy to hear about it here and after giving it a quick play it's a lot of fun.
Thanks GOG, many ears to come. :)
Awesome! I was going to wishlist it when I´ve seen that it was free!! Probably playing it today.

tYyPpI: Nice to get this to GOG with the extras and the compatibility (this was already released as freeware Jun 22, 2005 according to this page http://www.3drealms.com/stargunner/)
And GOG seem to have plenty to choose from for future Apogee/3D Realms Freeware titles too, according to this page!

Gaunathor: I have (still got the CD).

Stargunner is pretty fast-paced (in my opinion at least), got three different settings (space, land, and underwater), good music, a nice selection weapons and enemies, and hidden treasures (look for the sparkling). For the controls I prefer the keyboard. Gamepads always felt a little slow in comparison. Overall, I'd say Stargunner isn't quite as good as Tyrian, but it is still pretty good in it's own right.

MagnuzGuerra: Wow I played so much this game when it was released, it's a really good shmup, with LOTS of secrets and awesome soundtrack. Thank you very much for this great game!
What's the soundtrack like?
Happy Birthday, GOG!
And thank you :)
Thanks GOG, we all Lurve free stuff, especially free games!
I still have the original cd here and the game has been released as freeware before but it's fantastic to see it here! Getting it to run like I rememberd back in the old days was always a bit tricky in dosbox but I'm sure it will run fine now. Awesome sound track too.

Thanks GOG and happy birthday!
Awfully nice of you, GOG.

Thanks!
What's some other good classic freeware that could come to GOG in the future? (as in, legal freeware)

I would guess more than could be listed, but a couple titles to dwell on and hope for would be nice :)
