I've never seen it as a "hassle".

I have a PS3 but rarely use it; my favorite types of games tend to be the "harvest resources, build bases, control many things at once" games, and I find a keyboard and mouse to be no problem at all.

I'd take pc over console any day.
I don't like consoles...those devices and games mess my room.PC is necessary tool to live, but console is not,so I dumped all of hem over 10years ago.Furthermore,I left to play all video game twice, because of I felt gaming is less worthy than real life. But fortune let me come back to video gaming, and that is naturally PC gaming.
PC gaming often make weary,it's not good for people who tired of working. You need place to backlog for continuing it.I have blog to put out any information and memories to there. It significantly reduce waste of time and energy moreover hold motivation to play worthy games regardless of trend.

Well obviously those genres are not what I am talking about.

What then... driving / racing and sports games?

Nothing specific, just obviously not PC focused genres like strategy.

Well, besides driving, flying, whatever and sports games (of course I don't count games that have 1 or 2 buttons / controls in them, you can play them with your hairdryer), playing anything else on a console is like going backwards.

But never mind me, I am an elitist, competitive gamer. :p
Nope, not a single time.

I find consoles to restrictive. Regional lockings, cracking is harder, modding nearly impossible, no piracy ( I don't really know about console piracy, so I'm guessing. But it sure can't be easier), smaller selection of games as they need to be "sanctified" by MS or Sony (although this is somehwat changing due to XBox live and PSNet, or whatever it is called). And PC games are just about always cheaper, as there are no licensing fees for MS or Sony.

And consoles games no longer "run out of the box" in a way they are supposed to be, since you can patch them now.

I do like "console games" however, but with my sturdy XBox 360 pad, I can tackle those very well on the PC. And, imo, complaining that console games don't run very well on keyboard/mouse is a moot point, as there is a reason for PC gamepads. Like I'm not expecting to play a flight sim properly with mouse keyboard. And everybody buying a graphics card for 200$ can be bothered buying a pad for 30$.

And I don't find PC games more of a hassle. I got "fixworhty problems" maybe in one in ten games (Rage being the most recent and only one since, boy, I don't even know). And clients like Steam/Origin have taken a lot of hassle out installing uninstalling games (It takes ages to completely uninstall my retail Oblivion Goty, as every fucking DLC is a seperate install and i can't uninstall more than on game at once).

PC gaming was surely more cumberosme than consoles in the DOS era, but even back then PC gaming was more rewarding, imo.

In the end I think consoles are more "social" than PC gaming. I once considered getting a Wii for when friends are over, but I disregarded the idea as we usually just drink, crack jokes and go out.

StingingVelvet: ...
Never before (5-10 years ago) but more and more often nowadays, but not just PC gaming, all gaming in general.

Between the risk of video games censorship law appearing in my country, DRM that have become mandatory on 99% of new games, streaming that become bigger and bigger every year, I think that soon my video games playing days will be over.

The only issue is that I am running out of hobby, I stopped one of my favorite years ago (also because I decided it wasn't worth the hassle), if I also stop games then I won't have that many remaining...

StingingVelvet: I wasn't looking for a "ra ra pc gaming rules" thread.
Did you honestly believe you'd get anything other than that here? Honestly?

Hell, half your complaints are about the influence of console gaming, so it's still that kind of thread by proxy.

michaelleung: playing games as a whole is such a hassle anyways.
This.
YES! Gaming is one hobby among many others I enjoy and when it takes a few hours just to get a game to run right on a PC, I start wondering what's the point.

StingingVelvet: ...I always come back to PC gaming in the end for the tweaks, mods, graphics, mouse control and open platform benefits....
And like you, that's exactly why I never give it up completely. There are things you can do with a PC that consoles will never achieve. And control wise, there are certain kinds of games that simply offer a better experience when played on a PC.

When it comes to the whole PC vs Consoles thing though, I never really pick one side over the other, I just pick whichever platform can offer the best enjoyment of a certain game at that certain time. And really, unless you can't afford having both a PC and a console, which sucks, I know, I don't understand why anyone would play the fanboy game. You're just limiting your options.

BTW, I'd like to point out that console gaming is not completely hassle free. A few examples: I distinctly remember my brother and I desperately blowing into cartridges and begging the NES to let us play our games. And, more recently, my nephew wanted to play ModNation Racers on my PS3. I put the disc in and was met with a page saying there was a shitload of updates. It took roughly six hours to download/install everything. Ironically, he ended up playing NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 on the PC instead.

Miaghstir: Au contraire. I often think that the simpleness of console gaming doesn't make up to its limitations. Then again, I quite enjoy messing with the "behind the scenes" stuff; registry edits, tweaking files, changing settings, running monitoring and "cheating" applications only to see what actually happens behind the shiny front-end and what happens if I change a value here and there.
I'll quote this and get back to my delicious blue berry muffin.
Honestly, no... not yet.

Even if i'm at the PC for the most part of the day (software development) i still don't see PC gaming as an hassle... got a PS2 taking dust somewhere, and a DS that I enjoy quite a lot, but my favorite gaming rig is always the big buddy with the mouse and the keyboard.

Trilarion: However even worse for months now I have these thoughts about not playing anymore at all. This is extremely weird. I hope it goes away (one way or the other).
avatar
StingingVelvet: I think that is the root of this episode. I am just much less into games all of a sudden and want to treat it very casually. Consoles seem better suited to that.

The only game I have played the last two weeks is Machinarium and for only a couple hours.
That would have been my question if it isn't gaming overall you are tired of and need a break from. We can get burned out from doing anything including gaming so maybe go back to the classics of gaming, try something in a genre you haven't played before, or maybe just stop for however long you need (a month maybe?) and then come back and see if you want to game again. There are many other things to do besides gaming.

But to answer your question, yes it can be a pain in the ass sometimes to be a PC gamer but consoles are an even bigger pain in the ass so PC is the lesser of two evils and truth be told I love PC gaming. There are so much magic in all those worlds to explorer - Azeroth, Middle Earth, Forgotten Realms, Star Wars etc. This is why gaming must always remain fun and must never feel like a job - this Saturday I beat Dead Space 2 and I hated every second of it but forced myself to complete it for the sake of completing it and it felt like a chore/ like work and I think this was when I promised myself NEVER to FORCE myself to do anything in games but to always remember to have FUN - you gotta have the fun, man or else you are just waisting time.
I think it can be a hassle. Console games are fit to work out of the box (minus any bugs that need patching) but with PC gaming its like taking a chance. Computer may be able to play it (or play it with crap graphics) or it won't work at all and you blew money for nothing. The there is building and upgrading to be able to play. That can be a headache and a bit pricey (compared to consoles). I still have all my working consoles. I've only replaced my ps1/ps2 with a ps2 a few years ago as this is my 2nd gaming computer in the past 5 yrs (I think) cause the other went pfft.

The one thing I love most about PC gaming is the mods. I love being able to tweak my games or add content for free sometimes with mods. Being able to back up my games with digital downloads is a great perk too.

I am no fangirl of consoles or pc, but I do have my preferences. I lean more to PS3 for gaming since it has free online cause I hate payin for xbox; just too much crap I don't use or want and shouldn't have to pay for!
at time's I've kinda swayed back and forth between Console and PC, usually following the wax and wane of content available, but ever since the fall of SEGA I've been predominately PC centric.

very rarely will I pick up something for a console, usually it's either just for a specific game that doesn't have a PC release or (more likely) it's for a genera that the PC simply doesn't have.

like JRPGs.

their are plenty of "J" and "K" MMOs out there, but few single player Japanese RPGs ever make it too the PC. shit like Fortune Summoners / Recetteer and visual novels are cool and all, but nothing like getting a PC release of Tales of Symphonia / FF12.

between the absolute shit ton of F2P MMOs, awesome indi titles, Mods that offer better quality and content than the base game, cheap ass digital downloads, and GOGs I really can't think of a reason to pick up a controller.
