Wraith: X-Com: UFO Defense.

I really want to play it. I want to enjoy it. But I can't. Night combat is incredibly unfair and that's always when my missions take place. Everyone always says how easy it is, but I can't get past the first UFO crash without losing quite a few people.

The thing is, I've played Fallout, JA series, etc and never had the same problems.
Man, I love XCOM. It's not even healthy how much I love that game. I still play it through once or twice a year with increasingly absurd self-imposed requirements (last time was "hardest difficulty settings, no saves in combat, no blaster launchers, no power armor, no psionics" which is a stupid, stupid way to play that game, but I digress...)

You don't ever have to fight at night. Ever. You *should* be willing to fight at night for defense of terrorized cities, but try this: when you shoot down a ship, wait to fly out so that you arrive during daylight. Cities stay terrorized for about 24-48 hours, depending on your difficulty settings and (maybe?) other factors, so drop in during daytime. And base defense and offense is guided by interior lighting (and some glow sticks on some fast runners with your most accurate snipers with the heavy plasmas in back is a great, great way to keep your visibility high).

And yes. JA is the other squad-based, turn-based strategy game that I keep going back to (JA2, technically, but whatever.) Shame that JA3 turned out so badly =(

Xaromir: Yours looks highly exciting compared to what i was talking about.
It's called "expedition zur titanic" i never seen a english version of it,
maybe it was only for the german market, but it was quite demanding and technical.
There also is one called "hidden expedition - titanic" which is not the same, don't get fooled.
But you actually been able to dive down to the titanic in the game, i imagine it to be very exciting,
but never got there actually.
I my best guess is that it was supposed to be educational, it had Robert Ballard in it actually,
at least in the intro and apparently there was a chance to win a trip with him.
Not sure, i should get out the CD and see if i can rip the video.
Here is the cover shot:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/3803296137.03._SS400_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1056587421_.jpg
Pulled it out of a magzine but i know it was available as a boxed version,
since i have it.
Would take some screens or a sample video, but it will not even run anymore. :<

SheBear: I played a similar game I think. I don't remember exactly what it was called, but I remember the Robert Ballard bit.

You had to outfit an expedition to go search for different wrecks and you had to trawl with sonar to pick up possible things on the sea floor, then you had to send down either more sonar or a sub and look at the thing to see if it was a rock or actually something cool. And then you would run out of funding/time and fail. I never finished that game.
how could I forget Jaws for NES too? Could never figure that out. Sonar is a bad idea! lol

Arteveld: Pizza Tycoon, no matter how i looked at the graphs, advertised, and how awesome my pizzas and staff were, nobody came to my restaurant, and my revenue was always low, and i kept losing after a week or two. Now i feel economically dumb, and try not to get involved in money related things.
Dude... I had the exact same problem. Which was a shame cus' that game could have been so fun!

Edited to add: Oh and Myst. I could never get off that first damned island!

I was also way to dumb to understand the markers in JA:DG map editor. And i still am, the manual didn't explain them, nobody on the internet cared much for explaing them [n]either.
My friends didn't really care for JA, so my maps we're completely useless anyway.
Too bad, i really enjoyed doing maps in JA.

I've read in one mag [though they didn't seem to play some of the games they were reviewing] that You needed to have "at least 2 original recipes from the manual". Well, the Quick Start option gave You 4, and that didn't help. I've tried a few times to make those myself in FreeMode, and they we're REALLY BAD, i mean, the ratings were on 0's. Wasted a lot of time, trying to carefully place each ingredient pixel perfect. The manual wasn't much help, since it didn't show the layers. I wonder if anyone actually DID acomplish something in this game without doing the Underground assignments all the time. Perhaps when GOG releases it again, some will know.. ;)
X3 was the only game that took me a while to get into.
I was fortunate to play Dwarf Fortress back when it was a lot simpler, so it wasn't hard to keep up.
feel like i got on the wrong bus and ended up in a tough neighborhood.
just signed up on gog and plan to buy some starters like Baldur's Gate and Fallout. hardest games i've played to this point were aldorlea issues like Dreamscape and 3 Stars (which i completed with walkthrough maps in one hand and a mouse in the other, wandering for hours in a maze [1 of 3] while being randomly attacked every five seconds by monsters so vicious they had to coin new words for them). seems like a stroll in the park now compared to these harrowing tales. hardcore 8O.

all our biting is toothless, The only requirement of gog is to have fun we are not jack wagons, be free adventurer............
......I think someone put something in my tea.....
Most point and click games.

I just suck really badly at them.

Also Fate of the World is damn hard, (supposed to be though).
always seem to cause nuclear meltdowns, famine, or war.

The only strategy game I'm actually good at is Advanced Wars oddly enough.
I was pretty shocked to be instantly killed by a swarm of bugs the second I left town in Might & Magic 7.

I must be approaching this game wrong.

Seconded. I absolutely love point-and-click adventures, especially stuff like Monkey Island and the Discworld series but dammit, I can NEVER play em without having to constantly refer to a walkthrough. (The last GOG sale with the adventure games reminded me of this, especially after The Feeble Files convinced me that my mind is made of cheese...)

Also Zork. That one makes me feel like my brain is made of cotton wool (because cotton wool is dumber than cheese)

Although it's not nearly as bad about that as Might & Magic VI, MM7 will still throw you up against hordes of monsters. Don't try to wade in and slaughter them all at once - try to engage a few at a time, and move back as necessary to keep from being swarmed. You might have to retreat once or twice to recover before you wipe them all out.

What character classes are in your party?
X-3. Try as I might I just can't wrap my head around it. I want to, since when I was younger I absolutely loved most space sims, but I keep feeling like I need a keyboard overlay just to remember all of the shortcuts.
