This is no surprise, really. I did a quick search on Google and I'm happy to see it's not as simple as some of you make it sound - I'm sure there's places to grab all games but using Google, finding them isn't that easy. Some loose games on Rapidshare, Usenet and Torrent but not much more than that turns up.

And pirating will always happen - whether it is to see if a game works properly, or to see whether it's worth paying for - and of course, people simply wanting to collect games because they can - there's plenty of reasons. To be honest, if GOG had a system like the Android Market where I could play a game for an hour before after buying it with a chance to have a refund, I'd be more inclined to try the early Windows games because those tend to still be a bit wonky.

GOG should really not allow people to post such threads, as GOG members we should best stick to buying our favorite old games and promote the site to other older gamers and those interested in playing them
leave the job of worrying about the pirates and illegal stuff to the GOG staff and the authorities

i request GOG staff to put up a sticky warning to users not to create such threads its really not something that a person visiting the GOG forums should read about, it would be a real shame if a innocent user came to know about this pirate stuff after reading this thread

like i said its not something that is to be discussed on the forums, for example on steam there is at least one random user every hour who creates such a thread but the staff will close it regardless, if it can be helpful or harmful cause its not something to be discussed here is an example

Indeed. Even having some old games installed on such PC would be considered a faux-pas among his peers. And no self-respectable pirate kid could afford that, right?

I am sure that every GOG game is available somewhere out there. However, since they are not so popular and it's so cheap to get them here... people will hopefully choose the right way.

Steam are dickheads - you're just proving my case. GOG is respected because of their behaviour and attitude, Steam is not except by those who are ignorant of Steam's practices. I haven't seen a single staff member being a dick on the GOG forums and they were always friendly and courteous - on the Steam forums, I've seen unfair banning, censorship, threats, mod abuse, bias, etc. from moderators and staff.

A few years back, I was banned for a while because I had "circumvented the spam filter". In practice, I always self-censored my words on public forums because many didn't have a spam filter in place so I'd write "sh**" instead of "shit". Of course, the post in question was being critical of Steam (and rightly so - it involved them selling a broken game) and the moderator decided to "teach me a lesson" by banning me for self-censoring. Seriously, my experiences with the Steam forums have been a long string of bad events, abuse of power and ass-hattery so using them to prove your point is shooting yourself in the foot. The Steam forums are notorious for being shit and a place to avoid on most other forums I go to.

well when you have that large player base, some things become standards, im sure steam forums was much simpler and easy going in the early days, regardless i just wanted to show that as an example that its a standard not to allow such threads, its probably the same rule in most of the forums

The Steam forums were always bad - I joined up the first week they existed and while the users have become worse, the moderators were always quasi-nazis in their approach.

The most important reason why GOG games aren't in torrent sites is, that there's no need for them to be there. I'd say 99% of all the games GOG sells have been piratised ages ago, so there's a quite supply of Fallout or King's Bounty around. And people, who buy from GOG do so, because they want to do so and don't want to throw those games in torrents.

And pirates on the other hand, might have realized, that they've been moaning for huge game prices for ages, so they'd look even more dick heads, if they'd actually threw GOG games around.

Hiding the truth does nothing but piss those you were lying too off, not to mention you, in my opinion, insult the intelligence of every gamer on the net. If people dont know by now that pirates will pirate, then they are living in a dream world and need to wake the hell up, its nothing new, and i doubt it will ever go away.. We dont walk on egg shells on these forums. We discuss things maturely with rarely a argument in sight. If people dont like that, then all i have to say is tough. Go to the Steam forums, or some other censor happy forum. We like our adult conversations here, and i wouldnt have it any other way.

like i said earlier i would rather promote a few good games to other people than talk about piracy and its omg effects

If nobody posts links or instructions on how to get GOGs illegal, than everything is fine. Just don't help potential pirates!

Otherwise:
We can do nothing against it and we should not promote it. It's there but it's not too much because GOG games are not so popular anymore. After all they are old. Maybe they were on torrents even before they came here. I've heard that GOG claims, that abandonware sites take games off their shelf when they appear here, maybe because download drop. I don't think that piracy is currently a big problem for GOG. It might be in the future.
