Currently about 5 hours in, and am quite enjoying it. A little repetitive and sparse, maybe, and I'm hoping the plot starts to move beyond unrelated little vignettes, but I certainly don't think it deserves the mediocre critical response it's gotten.
I haven't played it, but it looks superb. I think folks were expecting it to be some sort of action RPG, but it's a survival FPS, mainly focused on weapons/combat (correct me if I am wrong). The setting is interesting enough to carry the premise along, I think. I hope the devs go the DRM-free route, otherwise I'll get it on a good price some day.

Is this game still in development or something? Last I heard it was on Early Access.

It's an... actionystealthyexplorythingy. Sort of in the same vein as Miasmata and Sir, You are Being Hunted, with a little touch of Dark Souls and some echoes of Far Cry 2 (in that there seems to be a little more world than content). The combat is quite good once you get used to it. It's based around using all your weapons in a combat situation, not just one or two, and around using the element of surprise to your advantage.

I get the impression that a lot of people saw the name "Monolith" attached to the project (since most of Blackpowder Games is made up of ex-Monolith devs) and expected the next FEAR or NOLF, not realizing that the project was entirely self-funded (as far as I know) and Blackpowder Games is a mere 6 guys. It's very much on an indie scale, and I think most of the problems it has have to do with it being stretched a little thin by its lack of resources. But what's there is good, especially where atmosphere and presentation (visuals and sound) are concerned. The combat is also quite a lot of fun, and very satisfying. I haven't completed it yet, so I can't say how the narrative shapes up or how well it holds up under its own weight after more than 5 hours.

Well, it doesn't say anything about it on the store page, so I assume it's out of Early Access (otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought it).

Well I'm wondering because even on their site it doesn't seem clear:

Get the Alpha Immediately on Steam!

Awesome, good to know! I am keeping an eye on it. Also love the aesthetics of the game in the B/W setting.

Hmm... yeah. I dunno, I guess. Well, I'll be reviewing this version, early access or not :P.
It was released from Early Access about a month ago ( that's when I bought it with a slight discount). I guess they haven't updated their own(!) site with that information. I must say that I enjoy it a lot, and my sparse recorded playtime is by no means accurate. I do tend to soften the contrast and add just the slightest bit of muted color to the game to go easy on my eyes though.
Cool premise but the game looks decidedly average.
It's a great game. Devs were very nice about bug reports and changes in the forums during early access. It's the only early access game I have bought so far and didn't regret it.

It's very good at what it does. Some people seem to want it to be something it isn't.
The change of the colors looks weird, how it seems to go black and white. Can you make it so it's always normal colors?

There is a "full color" mode, though I haven't tried it.

On topic: I bought Betrayer on sale (have been wanting it since it was first released) a few days ago and have played a few hours of it and I'm loving it. The art direction is stellar, the narration is spare but effective and the atmosphere is unbelievable. It might get repetitive but so far it's one of, if not the best game I've bought this year, and if it stays half as fun as it is now it'll be one of my all time favorites.
Betrayer now has a demo on Steam.
