I have odd problems with some games everyone seems to love unconditionally, to the point where I have been ostracized from certain corners of the internet for not enjoying games like Final Fantasy 7 or Rome: Total War.

FF7 is a matter of personal taste, but this thread is dedicated to those little issues you have with a game that completely ruin it for you for reasons unknown.

For me, in Rome: Total War, EVERY SINGLE TIME I PLAY AS ROME, Gaul makes war then peace with me and begs for an alliance. Every time. Within ten turns. Within fifteen turns we have a trade deal and full alliance. It's weird, and nearly everyone I've talked to says this can't happen and it never happened to me despite me having screenshots at one point.


I should really try the Steam version I got in a humble bundle some time, to see if it still happens.


So what are the weird little things that ruin a game for you?

That's probably a bug, since the AI is supposed to be more random than that . Reinstall it and you should be fine .

Real one: console interface for PC games. Threw away Skyrim after 10 hours while spending 200+ on Morrowind.

My odd problems usually come down to a problem with me and not necessarily the game itself. For instance, I really dislike timed events - "You need to defeat this enemy within 5 minutes or doom and gloooooom!" - because I'm generally more deliberate in my play style.

Not having any money at all in adventure games.

Seriously, the main characters travel all over the world to any and all possible locations but they never have even 50 cents to get a simple pack of chewing gum from a vending machine. Not even a coin! How do they even get from one place to the other? No amount of switching to adventure game logic will ever make me get used to characters in halfway realistic settings not having any money when they are walking around freely (not captured or some such).

Adventure game main characters are the biggest bums in their respective game worlds.

Being able to run into the stands in Major League Baseball for the NES.

Getting motivated to start a new game after finishing the current one. I often think "I'll jump into this game" but then don't start it because I start considering the fact that I have to learn new controls, new game mechanics, etc. So I end up firing up one of the old IE games instead. This happens a lot to me.

I'm a completionist. I want to experience all that a game has to offer so in terms of rpg's, its trying to do all the quests and visiting all the areas as possible. And with the limited time I have most days, it takes me a long time to finish one which is why I only play one at a time anymore.

Something that used to irritate me an extreme lot was body parts disappearing in walls, both of dead and living characters. I especially remember hating this in Jedi Knight when I played it for the first time (and it was the first shooter in full 3D I ever played). Back then I thought those were technical limitations that would go away very soon. Twenty years later this kind of stuff still happens almost everywhere to varying degrees and nobody gives a shit. Me neither.

Censored violence. Seriously, this gives me f*ckin' nightmares where I fight someone and no matter how hard I hit him, he doesn't take any damage.

If a PC game has SSAO, I turn it off. If a console game has it, and I notice it past looking for it, I won't buy it. Wind Waker HD in particular is this, but almost any game where I can notice the SSAO I won't buy. If I have a game that has it I probably couldn't tell at first.

Also, clipping used to drive me up the wall. I got over that one, but it would drive me crazy if I noticed it and would just about kill me. Lips out of sync with accompanying speech also more then than now.
